Director of Infection Prevention

The Director of Infection Prevention (IP) is responsible for leading, developing, and managing the facility's Infection Prevention and Control Program. This role ensures regulatory readiness, compliance with state and federal reporting standards, and implementation of evidence-based infection control practices to promote patient and staff safety. The Director oversees surveillance activities, data analysis, outbreak management, prevention strategies, and systemwide education initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Infection Prevention Leadership
  • Direct all operations of the Infection Prevention and Control Program.
  • Lead annual risk assessments, goal-setting, and program planning.
  • Maintain continuous readiness for regulatory surveys (CMS, Joint Commission, State Health Dept.).
Regulatory Compliance & Reporting
  • Ensure compliance with reporting requirements from:
    • CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services)
    • CDC/NHSN (National Healthcare Safety Network)
    • State and local public health agencies
  • Monitor the accuracy and timeliness of mandated infection reporting.
Surveillance & Data Analytics
  • Oversee surveillance processes for healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
  • Direct the collection, validation, analysis, and interpretation of infection control data.
  • Identify trends and recommend corrective or preventive interventions.
Clinical Collaboration & Advisory
  • Provide infection prevention guidance to clinical leaders, physicians, and staff.
  • Participate in quality, safety, and performance-improvement committees.
  • Support outbreak investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action planning.
Education & Training
  • Develop and deliver training programs on infection prevention, standard precautions, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure competency assessment for staff in infection control practices.
Program Management & Strategy
  • Maintain and update infection control policies and procedures to align with CDC, APIC, OSHA, and CMS standards.
  • Promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement throughout the organization.
Required Qualifications
Education (Required):
  • Master's degree in Nursing, Education, Epidemiology, Public Health, Clinical Microbiology, or another health-related field (Required).
Experience:
  • 3-5 years of clinical experience in a healthcare environment (Required).
  • 2+ years of experience in Infection Prevention or Epidemiology leadership (Required).
Certifications:
  • Current national Certification in Infection Control (CIC) - Required.
Skills & Competencies:
  • Strong understanding of infection prevention principles and epidemiology.
  • Proficiency with CDC, AHRQ, CMS, TJC, OSHA, and NHSN standards.
  • Skilled in data analysis, reporting, and performance-improvement methodologies.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, collaboration, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and maintain regulatory readiness at all times.
