Job description

At SMS Equipment, the Underground Mining Business Development Representative is the primary commercial point of contact for hard rock underground mining customers. The incumbent is responsible for driving sales of underground mining equipment and supporting after sales, and product support, activities through specialized technical expertise, product applications, and integration with the customer's operations.
Work Location: Anchorage, AK
Salary: $75,000 annually plus commission, with a first-year earnings guarantee of $100,000 (base salary + guaranteed commission).
Work arrangement: This role can be remote with travel throughout the assigned territory.
This role requires frequent travel within your assigned territory.
What You'll Do
  • Identify sales opportunities / manage new equipment sales by working closely with management to establish sales targets and implement action plans aligned with economic trends and product innovations. Develop detailed sales forecasts, budgets, and prospect reports to support business planning. Prepare compelling sales presentations, contracts, and proposals, including proactive equipment replacement solutions.
  • Support product after-sales activities by acting as the primary point of contact for customer products and services. Provide parts and service proposals, serve as a technical resource for customers, and ensure clear communication of performance standards. The incumbent must understand equipment component life cycles in order to make proactive recommendations to customers, present new technologies and product line improvements, and assist customers with systems such as KomTrax and VHMS.
  • Provide on-site customer support by liaising between branch operations and customer workflows, identifying and resolving service gaps. Engage in customers' day-to-day operations to fully understand future needs and align SMS Equipment service offerings accordingly. Lead strategic and operational meetings to ensure seamless collaboration and continuous improvement in customer support.
  • Build and strengthen customer relationships by developing and implementing sales initiatives to maintain and grow relationships with existing and prospective customers. Ensure consistent communication with customers by addressing operational challenges and gathering feedback to improve SMS Equipment services and offerings.

What You Bring
The ideal candidate will bring demonstrated ability to meet personal and team sales targets and knowledge of equipment life-cycle management and proactive maintenance strategies for underground mining equipment. Additional qualifications include:
  • Proficiency with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to maintain accurate customer data
  • Ability to prepare detailed proposals, budgets, and sales forecasts
  • Expertise in the sales process, including creating presentations, contracts, and proposals
  • Ability to build strong, long term relationships with customers at various organizational levels
  • Experience using structured sales approaches, such as the IMPACT sales process
  • Ability to identify gaps in customer workflows and propose actionable solutions
  • Analytical mindset to align customer needs with business objectives
  • Excellent communication skills to liaise between customers and internal teams
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non technical audiences
  • Team oriented approach to collaborate with branch operations, management, and other departments
  • Proactive approach to identifying efficiency and improvement opportunities
  • Ability to foster high levels of customer satisfaction through effective relationship building
  • Commitment to professional development and participation in industry related events
  • Strong organizational skills to manage forecasts, call schedules, and customer reporting
  • Attention to detail in maintaining equipment data and ensuring seamless service delivery
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively in a fast paced environment
  • Valid driver's license and the flexibility to travel regularly and adapt to diverse customer environments
