Can you do art commissions as a job?

A commission artist can work as a freelancer or for clients, creating custom artwork for individuals or businesses. This work often involves setting prices, managing client communication, and using digital tools like Photoshop or Procreate. Many commission artists work independently and set their own schedules, but consistent income may require building a strong portfolio and reputation.

What are some common challenges Commission Artists face in managing client expectations and deadlines?

Commission Artists often navigate challenges such as clarifying vague client requests, balancing multiple projects, and ensuring timely delivery of custom artwork. Clear, prompt communication is essential, as misunderstandings can lead to revisions and extended timelines. Creating a detailed commission agreement or contract helps define project scope, deadlines, and deliverables, ensuring both parties are aligned. Many artists also use project management tools or calendars to track progress and prioritize tasks. Being transparent with clients about timelines and updates helps build trust and leads to successful, repeat collaborations.

How to get commission work as an artist?

To get commission work as a commission artist, build a strong portfolio showcasing your best work and promote it on social media platforms, art communities, and personal websites. Networking with potential clients and responding promptly to inquiries can also help secure commissions. Developing skills in specific styles or mediums and maintaining a professional attitude increase your chances of attracting clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Commission Artist position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Commission Artist, you need strong artistic abilities, a solid understanding of various art mediums, and a portfolio showcasing your range. Digital artists often use tools like Adobe Photoshop, Procreate, or other industry-standard software, though formal certification is less common than demonstrated skill and experience. Excellent communication, time management, and client service skills help artists interpret briefs and maintain professional relationships. These competencies are essential for consistently delivering customized, high-quality artwork that meets clients' expectations and deadlines.

What is a Commission Artist job?

A Commission Artist is an independent artist who creates custom artwork based on client requests. They can work in various mediums, including digital and traditional art, and may take commissions for portraits, illustrations, concept art, or other creative pieces. Payment is usually agreed upon beforehand, and prices can vary based on complexity, size, and time required. Many commission artists operate online through social media or portfolio websites.

What is the 70 30 rule in art?

The 70/30 rule in art, including for commission artists, typically refers to a payment structure where 70% of the agreed fee is paid upfront before starting the work, and the remaining 30% is paid upon completion. This helps ensure commitment from both parties and protects the artist's time and effort during the project.

Job description

Twisted Ink is a brand new renovation located at 12509 N. Saginaw Blvd, Suite 100A, in North Fort Worth offering tattoos and piercings and is heavily advertised. This is a fast growing area and is sharing space with the largest of our 3 smoke shops. The closest tattoo studio to ours is about 15 minutes away and does not do piercings. Currently we are open from 11am to 10pm Monday through Thursday, 11am to 11pm Friday and Saturday, and 12pm-5pm on Sunday. That’s not to say you can’t work past those hours. If you’re appointment is for 8pm, and it’s a 5 hour piece, you will be able to work the entire time without worrying about the shop hours. There is plenty of parking and it is a semi-stand alone building along a busy highway. Hwy 287. The client waiting area and smoke shop are in the front. In the back of the space are 3 ample sized tattoo rooms and a piercing room all within 5 feet of the sanitation area. The tattoo rooms are private with doors and are furnished with a fully electric client chair, a rolling stool, a large metal working tray, a leg/arm rest, a desk, a full size mirror, a trash can, a sharps container, and a large toolbox with a wooden top. The piercing room is furnished with a full size mirror, a high end massage table, a rolling toolbox, a sharps container, and a trash can. All furnishings are brand new. The room can be decorated however you like to express your own personal style. (any blatantly offensive or racist images or themes are not allowed.) You will also have 2 off days per week that can be any days you choose to set providing it doesn’t interfere with scheduling. We provide ALL materials and safety supplies. Artists do not have to share Ink, or any other supplies. Each room has a complete set of Eternal Ink for colors, and Dynamic for black and white. The only inks that aren’t in each room are UV INK. You will be supplied with all your tattoo needles (specific to the brand and style you prefer) gloves, green soap, bottles, ink cups, cleaning supplies, trash bags, sharps containers, piercing jewelry, barriers, skin anesthetics, first aid, and aftercare products. Once again, we supply EVERYTHING except your tattoo machine and machine parts such as power supplies, lead wires, foot pedals, etc... However, it is the artists/piercers responsibility to ensure that the owners are notified well in advance so that the supplies can be restocked before running out. We have a beautiful website with online booking features, image galleries, and artist/piercer bios and portfolios. We also use shop software and a point-of-sale called Inkbook for the studio. It is a web-based shop program that helps us be more efficient and organized. The software is mainly used at the front desk, but it also comes with an app for each of our artists and piercers. Within the app you can add your own clients, set your own appointments, view your calendar, and it will notify you when the front desk has checked in or rescheduled your client. There are some other useful features like the ability to see your stats, tips, how much work you have performed as well as a forecast of how much you will potentially earn if your appointments and times stay on target. The owners of the studio (myself and another gentleman) are NOT artists or piercers, so we have absolutely no incentive to poach your clients, or cut you out from the ability of doing your work. We have set this up to make all our artists and piercers successful. We do have several tattoos and have an eye for art. For now, at least one of us will be on the premises at all times so if you needed anything we could take care of it. Artists and Piercers are considered 1099 contractors. The pay is 100% commission based and you will be responsible for your own taxes. There are no room rental fees, waiver fees, etc. all you would owe the studio is a percentage of the work that you do. Commission rate will be determined by experience and skill level, but we want our artists and piercers to be successful. Typically our split is 50/50. Commissions are paid on a weekly basis, through ADP, so direct deposit is an option. Our standard pay period throughout the company is Saturday through Friday, and pay is received the following Friday. You keep 100% of your cash tips same day, and credit/debit tips are on the paychecks.
