Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Telecommunications Design Engineer to support a secure federal communications environment responsible for maintaining and modernizing mission critical telecommunications and data center infrastructure.
This role blends hands on Operations & Maintenance support with engineering design and strategic infrastructure planning, ensuring telecommunications and network systems operate reliably and align with Department of Defense (DoD) and commercial engineering standards.
The engineer will develop engineering documentation and infrastructure designs supporting secure voice, data, and communications systems within a high availability environment.
Core Responsibilities
• Perform daily Operations & Maintenance (O&M) and direct touch support for telecommunications and data center infrastructure.
• Maintain and troubleshoot telecommunications circuits, hardware, and network systems within secure environments.
• Develop engineering documentation including rack elevations, engineering diagrams, and bills of materials (BOMs).
• Create and maintain IT architecture roadmaps and infrastructure modernization plans.
• Design and evaluate telecommunications and data center network infrastructure following DoD and commercial engineering standards.
• Support installation, configuration, and integration of telecommunications equipment across secure facilities.
• Analyze current infrastructure and recommend improvements to increase reliability, scalability, and security.
• Coordinate with engineering, operations, and cybersecurity teams to ensure systems meet mission requirements.
Required Qualifications
12+ years of experience designing, analyzing, and supporting telecommunications or IT infrastructure using DoD and commercial standards
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field
• Experience producing engineering documentation including:
• Rack elevations
• Network diagrams
• Engineering configurations
• Bills of materials (BOMs)
• Strong understanding of telecommunications infrastructure, network architecture, and data center environments
• Experience supporting Layer 1 and Layer 2 infrastructure, including cabling, communications racks, and telecom rooms
Required Certifications
Candidates must hold one of the following DoD 8140 certifications:
• Network+
• Security+
• Cloud+
• SSCP
• CASP+
• CISSP
• CCNP Security
AND
BICSI RCDD (Registered Communications Distribution Designer) or equivalent advanced telecommunications design certification.
Preferred Certifications
• CCNA
• CTS D (for AV or communications integration)
• Manufacturer design certifications
• Enterprise telecommunications architecture training
Work Environment
This role operates within a secure, mission critical federal communications environment where telecommunications reliability and infrastructure stability are essential. Engineers support both hands on infrastructure operations and long term architecture planning within highly secure facilities.
Work is performed fully onsite at Bolling AFB in Washington, DC.
