How much do combinatorics jobs pay per year?
What does a Combinatorics job involve?
A job in combinatorics typically involves studying and applying mathematical principles related to counting, arranging, and optimizing discrete structures. Professionals in this field often work in academia, computer science, cryptography, operations research, and data analysis. Their tasks may include solving combinatorial problems, developing algorithms, analyzing network structures, and contributing to advancements in artificial intelligence and optimization.
What types of projects do professionals in combinatorics typically work on?
Professionals specializing in combinatorics often work on projects that involve analyzing and optimizing complex systems, such as developing efficient algorithms, designing networks, or studying patterns within large datasets. Common tasks may include formulating mathematical models, conducting research, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams in fields like computer science, operations research, or engineering. Depending on the sector, projects might focus on cryptography, data science, bioinformatics, logistics, or scheduling. The work environment is typically collaborative and may involve both independent research and teamwork, offering opportunities for innovation and continuous skill development.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Combinatorics position, and why are they important?
To excel in a role focused on combinatorics, you need a solid background in mathematics, particularly discrete mathematics and advanced problem-solving skills, typically supported by a degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency with mathematical software such as MATLAB, Mathematica, or programming languages like Python is often expected, along with experience in algorithm development or research tools. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this field. These competencies enable accurate problem modeling, efficient collaboration, and the innovative application of combinatorial techniques to real-world challenges.

Qualifications
An earned doctorate in mathematics or a closely related discipline is required by the time of appointment.
Candidates must demonstrate a record of research accomplishment and clear plans for further developing an active research program. Candidates should also provide evidence of their potential to secure external grant funding.
Candidates must demonstrate potential for, or experience in, teaching mathematics and mentoring student research at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Application Instructions
A complete application must include the following materials submitted electronically via Interfolio at apply.interfolio.com/187223:
- A cover letter.
- A curriculum vitae.
- A research statement addressing past and current research accomplishments, as well as plans for developing an active research program.
- A teaching statement addressing teaching and mentoring experience, teaching philosophy, and approach to student mentorship.
- At least three confidential letters of recommendation, at least one of which must address teaching; see additional instructions below.
- A transcript from the highest-degree-granting institution; an unofficial copy is acceptable at the application stage.
- A completed self-disclosed Religious Affiliation Form.
Candidates invited for an on-campus interview will be required to provide an official transcript.
Complete applications must be submitted by 11 PM Central time on October 1, 2026.
Questions concerning the position or application process should be directed to Mark Sepanski, Search Committee Chair, at mark_sepanski@baylor.edu.
Additional Instructions concerning letters of recommendation: Applicants should request confidential letters of recommendation through their Interfolio Dossier under the Letter section. Ensure that confidentiality is selected. Once requested, a blank letter will be created under applicant's Materials section which then MUST be attached to the Confidential Letter of Recommendation or Evaluation requirement in the Documents section of their application. These (blank) letters do not need to be finalized by recommenders in order to be attached by the applicant. Applicants will not be able to view confidential letters but will still be able to attach them to applications. If a letter has not been completed by the recommender by application submission, applicants will receive a notification once the letter is received in Interfolio. Information on how to request and attach confidential letters of recommendation to an Interfolio hosted position can be found here: https://product-help.interfolio.com/en_US/managing-letters-and-requests/request-letters-of-recommendation
If a candidate desires to submit more than 3 confidential letters of recommendation, additional letters of recommendation may be submitted as "additional documents", subject to the procedures above.
