Summary
Combination Building Inspector, under the general supervision of the Chief Building Official, ensures code and zoning compliance through inspections of commercial and residential construction. Responsibilities include plan review, documentation, code guidance, complaint investigation, notice issuance, agency collaboration, code improvement suggestions, emergency support, and teamwork.
Hourly Wage is Dependent on Certifications and related years of Experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conducts inspections of commercial and residential construction projects (electrical, plumbing, mechanical, building, and related) to ensure code and some zoning/development standard compliance
  • Reviews commercial and residential construction plans for compliance with relevant codes and regulations
  • Maintains detailed documentation of inspections, violations, actions, plan reviews, and compliance for legal purposes
  • Consults with and advises stakeholders (homeowners, builders, design professionals) on plans, code compliance, interpretations, and related procedures
  • Investigates construction-related complaints, issues violation notices (Stop Work Orders, Dangerous Building notices), and reports unsafe conditions
  • Collaborates with other city agencies on design, licensing, and code requirements
  • Fosters positive working relationships with various stakeholders
  • Recommends improvements to existing codes, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Assists in the investigation of fires, explosions, or hazardous conditions and orders evacuations when necessary
  • Actively participates in team functions, meetings, and activities to support team goals
  • Follows City financial policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Combination Building Inspector I or II
  • Two (2) years of experience in building inspections, code enforcement, or construction trade

Combination Building Inspector III or IV
  • Three (3) years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in construction science, industrial technology, architecture, engineering, or related field
  • Previous construction inspection experience

Two (2) ICC Residential and/or Commercial Inspector certification

Master Trade License (Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical) AND
