What are column writers?

Column writers are journalists or authors who regularly contribute opinion or feature pieces, known as columns, to newspapers, magazines, or online publications. Their work often reflects their personal viewpoints, expertise, or commentary on specific topics such as politics, culture, sports, or lifestyle. Column writers play a key role in shaping public opinion and engaging readers by providing insights, analysis, and unique perspectives. They must stay informed about current events and trends relevant to their beat, and typically develop a consistent voice or style that resonates with their audience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Column Writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Column Writer, you need exceptional writing skills, subject matter expertise, and often a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems, SEO tools, and digital publishing platforms is typically required. Creativity, strong research abilities, and the capacity to engage readers with a unique voice are standout soft skills. These competencies are vital for producing compelling, credible columns that attract and retain a dedicated readership.

How does a column writer typically collaborate with editors and other team members in a newsroom setting?

Column writers regularly work with editors to refine their ideas, ensure accuracy, and maintain the publication's tone and standards. They often attend editorial meetings to pitch topics and discuss upcoming issues or themes. Collaboration may also include coordinating with fact-checkers, photographers, and digital content teams to enhance their columns with visuals or multimedia elements. This team-oriented environment helps column writers produce engaging content while meeting deadlines and editorial expectations.

Job description

About Column
For companies building financial technology and transforming the financial services space, the biggest bottleneck to their growth and innovation is often the underlying banks and infrastructure stack they rely on. We have spent our careers founding and scaling companies like Plaid, Square, Meta, Blend, and Affirm, and have seen this problem firsthand - builders and developers needing to partner with traditional banks, and creating API and abstraction layers over the patchwork that is the bank, its core, and many other vendors. All of this results in a complex (and often expensive) banking supply chain involving a user, fintech, BaaS middleware provider, bank, core and the Federal Reserve.
At Column, we set out to simplify and fix this. We are a bank and a software company built from the ground up, offering builders and developers technology-forward banking solutions that cut out the hundreds of vendors, middleware providers, and abstraction layers. This means a safer, more transparent, and less costly banking supply chain. Come build with us!
The opportunity:
As a Customer Engineer at Column, you'll partner with tech-forward companies to build financial products and solutions using Column's APIs. This is a highly cross-functional role: you'll work closely with engineering, business, operations, legal, and compliance teams to support customer implementations and expand customer activity on Column-directly contributing to the growth of our business.
This role is more technically demanding than the average Customer Engineering position. You'll need to develop a deep understanding of our platform and APIs to serve as a trusted technical partner to customers. Beyond customer implementation, you'll gather and synthesize customer feedback, identify product gaps, and help shape new product requirements, working directly with our engineering team to drive product development.
You'll also be responsible for building internal tools and automation to improve our team's operational efficiency. You will have significant opportunities to expand your scope and take on additional responsibility as you grow.
This role is based in our Presidio office in San Francisco and follows a four-day, in-person schedule. You will report to Column's Head of Solution Engineering.
What you'll do:
  • Support the technical relationship with our customers across pre-sales, implementation, onboarding, and support.
  • Assist with the implementation and delivery of strategic cross-functional projects with guidance from senior team members.
  • Leverage AI to build internal tooling and processes to address operational bottlenecks
  • Collect and organize product feedback, help identify gaps, and support the writing of product requirement documents.
  • Learn to manage roadmap expectations with our engineering team and customers.
  • Perform day-to-day activities consistent with safe and sound business practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Help identify, assess, and manage risk by adhering to policies and procedures established by the Bank, and report issues to management.
What you'll need to be successful:
  • 3+ years of experience in a technical or technical-adjacent role
  • Strong customer-facing presence
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Problem-solving aptitude and curiosity
  • Humble attitude and eagerness to roll up your sleeves
  • Basic technical skills with potential to grow in coding (JavaScript or Python) and ability to learn SQL
  • Interest in financial services industry (prior knowledge is helpful but not required)
What you'll get from us:
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision plans, including options that are 100% covered by Column for you and 100% covered for your dependents!
  • Comprehensive family planning and fertility benefits via partnership with Carrot, including reimbursement of up to $20,000 in qualified expenses
  • Up to $2,000 (post-tax) monthly rent subsidy for employees living within 2 miles of Column's office
  • FSA and HSA account options to enable use of pre-tax money for medical and dependent care expenses
  • 401k plan, including self-directed brokerage options
  • Flexible time-off policy - take the time off that you want and need to relax and recharge
  • 100% paid parental leave, including 16 weeks for birth mothers, 12 weeks for primary caregivers, and 8 weeks for secondary caregivers
  • Up to $4,500 in annual reimbursements for backup childcare
  • Catered lunches and dinners for SF employees
  • Commuter benefits, including paid transportation to-and-from the office
  • Regular team building events, including annual offsite
Pay transparency:
Compensation packages at Column include base salary, equity, and benefits. New hire offers are made based on a candidate's experience, expertise, geographic location, and internal pay equity relative to peers.
The annual US base salary range for this role is $125,000 - $160,000 + equity.
We look forward to hearing from you
