Job description

We are seeking a skilled Paint Color Matching Technician to join our finishing lab team. This position is responsible for accurately matching custom paint and stain colors, preparing coatings onsite, and ensuring color consistency for kitchen cabinet finishes. The ideal candidate will have experience working with color-matching software, interpreting LAB color data, and applying coatings using hand-spray techniques. A strong understanding of finishing processes and troubleshooting coating issues is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Color Matching & Formulation:
    • Match custom colors for paints, stains, and varnishes to meet customer and production requirements.
    • Utilize color-matching software and spectrophotometers to analyze and adjust LAB values for precise color replication.
    • Prepare and mix coatings onsite, adjusting formulas to achieve desired color and performance characteristics.
  • Application & Testing:
    • Hand spray coatings onto wood substrates, ensuring even coverage and desired finish quality.
    • Conduct test panels and sample approvals for production use.
    • Evaluate and adjust application techniques to improve consistency and efficiency.
  • Troubleshooting & Quality Control:
    • Identify and resolve finishing issues such as color shifts, adhesion problems, and surface defects.
    • Work with production teams to maintain color consistency across batches.
    • Ensure coatings meet company and industry standards for durability and aesthetics.
  • Equipment & Safety Compliance:
    • Maintain and calibrate color-matching equipment and spray guns.
    • Follow proper handling procedures for coatings, solvents, and related chemicals.
    • Adhere to workplace safety regulations, including PPE requirements and ventilation protocols.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in color matching, paint mixing, or wood finishing, preferably in a manufacturing or lab setting.
  • Knowledge of LAB color measurement and color-matching software (e.g., X-Rite, Datacolor, or similar).
  • Proficiency in hand-spraying stains, paints, and varnishes with spray guns.
