Position Overview

The Formulation and Color Chemist will use their creative skills to develop pigment formulas, work on shade matching, and will evaluate formulas for workability and performance. You will utilize raw materials, chemical compounds, and chemical processes to create new products and technologies for tattoo ink and permanent makeup (PMU).

This role must perform research to support new product development and make continued improvements to current formulations. During the development phases, you will be required to work with a cross-functional team to complete project initiatives and provide feedback to support business decisions.

This is a non-exempt (hourly) role and may pay up to $60,000 annually, depending on experience.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Develop pigment based off existing formula guidelines and best practices.
  • Formulate product prototypes and evaluate them for chemical and physical properties.
  • Lead development of new products and provide improvements to existing products.
  • Identify, test, and support sourcing of new raw materials.
  • Establish product specifications and procedures as required for R&D projects and support transition to QC and production.
  • Obtain data and information required for regulatory submissions and patent applications.
  • Continued regulatory support and research to ensure product compliance and safety.
  • Mix pigment per production schedule that meets all quality and process reqs for manufacturing.
  • Manage color evaluations with timely reporting and recordkeeping to ensure quality.
  • Analyze evaluation issues and report findings to management.
  • Provide guidance and training to production staff.
  • Create Standard Operating Procedures. (SOPs)
  • Support R&D dept with different aspects of mixing, color profile creation, new shade development and competitor color documentation.
  • Research and perform color theory related exercises.
  • Ensure all safety and health standards are met.
  • Report adverse events and provide samples to various labs. Track and notify management if corrective action is needed.
  • Maintain a clean work area and equipment on top of regular scheduled cleanings.
  • Communicate and collaborate regularly with R&D regarding problems or issues impacting production.
  • Maintain efficient workflow procedures that improve efficiency without compromising safety or quality.
  • Any other duties needed to help drive to our Vision, fulfill our Mission, and abide by our Company’s values.

Is this role for you?

  • Formal art and/or color theory education or equivalent work experience
  • Pigment Mixing experience
  • Minimum 3 years of management experience
  • Experience in the formulation of finished goods
  • Self-motivated and organized
  • Foundational understanding of chemical properties, chemistry, and formulation
  • Analytical thinker and critical problem solver
  • Team player and ability to work cross-functionally
  • Provide a key knowledge foundation in an area of product development, inks, polymer chemistry, formulation chemistry, organic chemistry, regulatory, clinical research, color theory and/or pigments
  • Think creatively
  • Color perception and color matching skills (Munsel Hue Color Test)
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs
  • Prolonged periods of standing
  • Excellent organization skills with ability to manage priorities
  • Must be able to safely access and navigate the operations and production areas as needed
  • Proficient Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook)
