Position Summary

  • Title: Color Guard Director
  • Department: Reports to Fine Arts Director - Principal
  • Classification: Seasonal for 2026-2027 school year

Overview

The Color Guard Director is responsible for the artistic, instructional, and organizational leadership of the high school color guard program. This individual works in collaboration with the Band Director and Fine Arts Department to provide students with high-quality training in movement, equipment, choreography, and performance while fostering teamwork, discipline, and personal growth in alignment with the school’s mission.

Prayer, Study, Community, Preaching – this is Dominican education at St. Pius X High School. Inspired by Veritas, young men and women embrace academic excellence and integrity, celebrate the community's diverse gifts and heritage, and embody social justice and service.

Responsibilities

Program Leadership

  • Plan and direct all rehearsals for the color guard during marching band season and winter guard.
  • Develop and teach choreography, movement, and equipment technique.
  • Establish performance standards, rehearsal expectations, and guard culture.

Instruction & Student Development

  • Provide skill-appropriate instruction for students of varying experience levels.
  • Support student leadership within the guard.
  • Promote safety, proper technique, and injury prevention.
  • Encourage confidence, discipline, collaboration, and accountability.

Performance & Competition

  • Prepare the guard for football games, pep rallies, parades, competitions, and other performances.
  • Attend all performances and competitions.
  • Collaborate with the Band Director on show design, drill, and visual concepts.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with the Band Director, Fine Arts staff, and administration.
  • Communicate expectations, schedules, and needs clearly with students and families.
  • Participate in planning meetings as needed.

Administrative & Logistical Duties

  • Support uniform, equipment, and costuming needs.
  • Maintain attendance and rehearsal records.
  • Help coordinate volunteers, chaperones, and event logistics when needed.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Commitment to embrace the Catholic Mission and Dominican Charism at St. Pius X High School.
  • Completion of Safe Haven environment training.
  • Bachelor’s in related field preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with constituency groups.
  • Professional attitude and appearance.
  • Program knowledge; director experience preferred.
  • Experience performing in or directing a color guard, winter guard, or similar visual performance ensemble.
  • Strong knowledge of choreography, movement, and equipment technique. Ability to work afternoons, evenings, and weekends as required by the performance schedule.
  • Seasonal July-April Football season in Fall and winter guard competitions in Spring.
