Job Summary
We're seeking a detail-oriented Composition Production Technician to join our growing prepress team at Bolger. You'll be the creative bridge between our designers and our production floor, ensuring every project meets our exacting standards and exceeds client expectations. This is a hands-on role for someone passionate about print quality and committed to mastering the technical craft of modern prepress production.
File Management & Preflighting
โข Review and validate incoming digital files (PDFs, InDesign, Illustrator, QuarkXPress) from clients and internal teams
โข Run comprehensive preflight checks using industry-standard software to catch missing fonts, low-res images, color space issues, bleed problems, and other potential problems before they reach print
โข Communicate findings clearly and efficiently, troubleshooting issues or escalating to the appropriate team member
Layout & Composition
โข Master advanced page layout software to assemble text, images, and graphics with precision
โข Refine composition elements (text flow, leading, kerning, tracking, image placement) for optimal visual impact and readability
โข Build and maintain consistent style sheets across complex documents
Color Correction & Color Management
โข Demonstrate expertise in color theory and digital color correction, including curves, levels, saturation, and hue adjustments
โข Ensure proper color mode conversion (RGB to CMYK, spot color management) with attention to color fidelity and brand standards
โข Perform advanced image correction and retouching using Photoshop to optimize images for print reproduction
โข Manage color profiles and ICC workflows to maintain consistency across various print processes
โข Analyze and correct white balance, exposure, contrast, and color cast issues on both photographic and graphic assets
โข Apply color correction to ensure accurate proofs and press-ready files that match client intent and brand guidelines
Image Handling & Trapping
โข Verify image resolution, color space, and quality specifications for all output methods (offset, digital, large format)
โข Prepare and implement proper trapping techniques to prevent registration issues and color gaps
Quality Assurance & Proofing
โข Generate digital and hard-copy proofs with a critical eye for accuracy in layout, typography, color, and imagery
โข Incorporate revisions and feedback from stakeholders efficiently and professionally
โข Maintain meticulous documentation of changes and version control throughout the production cycle
Output & File Preparation
โข Prepare final, print-ready files for all output destinations with correct specifications
โข Manage file naming conventions, archival systems, and project documentation for efficient future access
Collaboration & Professional Development
โข Partner effectively with designers, project managers, and press operators to ensure smooth production workflows
โข Stay current with industry trends, software updates, and emerging print technologies
โข Share technical expertise and mentor team members as needed
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1โ3 years of hands-on experience in prepress, composition, or graphic design (print industry experience strongly preferred)
- Expert proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop (color correction experience essential)
- Solid understanding of typography, page layout principles, color management (CMYK, spot color), and print production basics
- Strong visual perception and attention to detail, with ability to identify color and quality issues
- Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer and lift up to 20 lbs. as needed
Preferred
- Associate degree or certification in graphic communications, printing technology, or related field
- Hands-on experience with preflight software (Enfocus PitStop or similar)
- Familiarity with multiple print processes: offset printing, digital printing, and large-format production
- Advanced color correction and image retouching experience
Working Conditions
- Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer.
- Ability to lift and move objects up to 20 lbs. as needed.
- Visual acuity and color perception required for accurate proofing.
