What is it that we do at Colonial Pipeline Company?

Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day. Colonial transports various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, and fuels for the U.S. military through a pipeline system. Colonial transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast, providing refined products to more than 50 million Americans.

About the Indirect Tax Manager Position

The Indirect Tax Manager is the enterprise subject matter expert for motor fuels and excise taxes at Colonial Pipeline Company. This role manages the company's fuel and excise tax licensing, reporting, and compliance obligations across the enterprise and its affiliates. As a strategic business partner to Accounting, external tax advisors, and regulatory authorities, this position ensures accurate reporting, strong audit outcomes, and proactive risk management. The Indirect Tax Manager provides technical and strategic guidance to the Director of Tax on federal, state, and local excise tax matters and drives scalable process improvements that support growth initiatives.

What You Get to Do
  • Manage the end-to-end motor fuels and excise tax compliance process, establishing controls and performance standards to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and regulatory compliance
  • Serve as the primary advisor to the Director of Tax on federal, state, and local fuel and excise tax matters, including interpretation of new and emerging legislation
  • Direct external tax consultants supporting compliance, audits, planning, and structuring of growth initiatives
  • Design, document, and maintain scalable excise tax policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Lead federal and state fuel and excise tax audits and inquiries, serving as the main point of contact and driving timely resolutions
  • Build and maintain relationships with state and local taxing authorities and key external partners
  • Provide cross-functional support for ad valorem and sales and use tax processes
  • Collaborate with Financial Reporting and Accounting to ensure indirect taxes are accurately presented in financial statements
  • Drive modernization and continuous process improvement through data, technology, and automation
  • Support the Director of Tax with special projects, including due diligence and integration activities
What You Bring to the Table
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or related field from an accredited college or university
  • 8-10+ years of experience in federal and state fuel and excise tax compliance and consulting
  • Experience working with AvaTax Excise, Avalara Returns Excise, or similar software solutions
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Strong ability to manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical requirements into business recommendations
Skills That Set You Apart
  • Master's degree in Tax, Accounting, or MBA
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification
  • Combination of public accounting and corporate accounting experience
