The Role

The Director of Data Governance is responsible for executing and scaling Lumen's enterprise data governance foundation. This role partners with the Data Governance Officer to operationalize Lumen's enterprise data governance operating model, including stewardship, data product ownership, and the enterprise data marketplace. 

Reporting to the Data Governance Officer, this role operationalizes centralized governance with federated ownership, ensures stewardship is established across master data domains, and supports alignment of enterprise data architecture direction across platforms and technologies. The Director plays a key role in enabling the Enterprise Data Council (EDC), supporting governance forums and ensuring decisions, standards, and actions are effectively implemented across the organization.

This role is accountable for improving the trust, transparency, and consistency of Lumen's data assets by driving adoption of governance practices across Product, Engineering, Network, Security, and functional organizations. The ideal candidate is a strong operator who can translate governance strategy into actionable programs, partner across teams to drive adoption, and ensure governance is consistently embedded into how the enterprise operates.

The Main Responsibilities
  • Support the operationalization of enterprise data governance, including implementing defined roles, decision rights, and accountability frameworks.
  • Partner with the Data Governance Officer to support the Enterprise Data Council (EDC), including preparing materials, tracking decisions, and ensuring follow-through on governance outcomes.
  • Drive adoption of the federated data stewardship model across business domains, partnering with domain leaders to establish ownership and stewardship accountability.
  • Drive definition and adoption of domain-based ownership, including master data domains, data products, and critical data elements, ensuring clear accountability across business and technology.
  • Develop enterprise governance KPIs and scorecards tied to data quality, ownership, adoption, and business outcomes.
  • Implement and reinforce enterprise data standards, including business glossary, data definitions, and modeling practices.
  • Partner with Technology and Engineering teams to align governance practices with enterprise data architecture and platform capabilities.
  • Own implementation and enterprise adoption of data governance platforms (e.g., Informatica CDGC), including catalog, lineage, data quality, and marketplace capabilities.
  • Ensure governance processes align with AI governance requirements, supporting compliant and responsible data usage.
  • Work cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Network, and Security to embed governance practices into business processes and drive consistent outcomes.
  • Enable and operationalize enterprise Data Marketplace capabilities, driving adoption of data products, self-service access, and governed data sharing.
  • Establish governance execution mechanisms, including decision tracking, issue escalation, and enforcement of standards across domains.
What We Look For in a Candidate
  • 10-12+ years of experience in data, analytics, technology, or architecture, with experience supporting or implementing data governance programs.
  • Experience operationalizing governance frameworks within complex, federated organizations.
  • Strong understanding of data ownership models, stewardship, master data, and data standards.
  • Experience working within federated governance models, supporting alignment between centralized standards and business execution.
  • Familiarity with data quality, metadata management, lineage, and governance tooling.
  • Ability to work across teams and influence stakeholders to drive adoption of governance practices.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate governance concepts into clear, actionable guidance.
  • Exposure to AI governance considerations, including data readiness, control, and compliance.
  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred.
Compensation
This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay is based on skills, experience and other relevant factors.
