Job Description

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics in the College of Science at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) invites applications for a full-time, 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor of Data Science to begin Fall 2026. Qualified candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, or a closely related field. Suitable candidates must have: 1) A solid ongoing research program with a demonstrated publication record in the area of data science; 2) The ability to mentor post-doctoral research scholars, direct MS theses, and participate in interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs; 3) Effective communication skills; and 4) Commitment to excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses.

This position supports our rapidly growing Data Science graduate program. It is a 9-month tenure-track appointment as an Assistant Professor of Data Science, with a balanced 50% research and 50% teaching load, and the possibility of a reduced teaching load during the initial years. Ideal candidates for data science must have demonstrated ability to contribute to our core courses and potentially expand elective offerings in data science. Preference will be given to those candidates with post-doctoral experience, outstanding publications, successful grant writing experience, overlapping interests with the current departmental strengths, commitment to collaborative/interdisciplinary efforts, and experience working with a broad range of students.

Department

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics strives to increase its research profile while maintaining excellence in teaching courses in the BS and MS programs in mathematics and MS in data science as well as service courses. The MS in Mathematics Program with its three tracks - Applied and Computational Mathematics, Statistics, and Mathematics Education - provides our students with preparation for careers in education, science, and industry and a solid foundation for further study in mathematics. Our Data Science MS program began in the Fall of 2023, and we are developing a new Ph.D. program in data science. The Department participates in interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs offered by the College of Science. Our department is active in various research areas across multiple mathematical concentrations, including modeling, differential equations, fluid dynamics, elasticity, electro and magneto-statics, porous media, microorganism swimming, fracture mechanics, analysis, statistics, mathematics education, and data science. We also serve our community by providing expertise to local schools, industry, and business

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Data Science/Statistics/Applied Mathematics/Mathematics or other closely related fields

  • Strong publication record in data science research and an ongoing scholarly program

  • Evidence of teaching a variety of undergraduate and graduate data science courses and effective classroom instruction

  • Ability to direct MS thesis committees and participate in interdisciplinary Ph.D. committees

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong record of publications and a well-defined research agenda in data science, including areas such as Big Data Analytics, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, High-Dimensional Data Analysis, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Neuromorphic Computing, and Statistical Modeling.

  • Demonstrated breadth and depth of knowledge across core areas of data science.

  • Experience with successful grant writing

  • Collaborative ability with colleagues and evidence of interdisciplinary work
