Exciting Opportunity!
The Superior Public Library is looking to hire a Youth Services Librarian that will provide fun and enriching programs for our youth and families in our community.
Work Location: Superior Public Library - 1530 Tower Ave.
Work Schedule: Typical working hours will be 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday; 1 evening/week until 7:15 pm and approximately 1 Saturday/month 9:45 am - 3:15 pm.

Purpose & Overview
Performs professional library services under general supervision at the Superior Public Library. Duties include staffing public service desks and other service areas; selecting, cataloging, and maintaining library materials and special collections; providing reference and research services; planning programs and conducting outreach.
Librarians perform entry- to mid-level professional library work requiring independent judgment in service or program areas and collection development. Librarians may be responsible for planning, overseeing and evaluating library programs or services under the direction of a manager and may represent the library to other organizations. Librarians at this level may also perform duties of a Library Technician.
Employment Standards
Primary Responsibilities
  1. Provide friendly and knowledgeable assistance at the Youth Services Desk, helping patrons discover materials, answer questions, access library resources, and make the most of their library experience.
  2. Organize, prepare, and deliver fun and enriching in-person and passive programs for youth and families that promote reading, literacy, learning, and library use.
  3. Conduct outreach visits and tours at the library and in the community, including schools, daycares, and other youth-focused organizations.
  4. Support and help implement the Summer Reading Program and plan and present early literacy Storytimes for children.
  5. Select materials for assigned collection areas in accordance with the Collection Development Policy, and maintain those collections through ongoing evaluation, weeding, and development to ensure they meet community needs and interests.

Other Responsibilities
  1. Performs copy or original cataloging and maintains records in the library database.
  2. Performs acquisition procedures, including ordering and claims.
  3. Maintains professional and technical expertise through training, workshops, and professional reading.
  4. Opens and closes the library and supervises staff and daily operations in the manager's absence.
  5. Provides public service desk coverage and performs duties outlined in the Library Technician role.
  6. Troubleshoots basic technology issues and assists patrons with public computers and digital services.
  7. Provides reference and readers advisory services, assisting patrons with accessing library and online resources.
  8. Brings library services into the community by collaborating with area organizations and promoting services to diverse audiences.
  9. Assists patrons with local history and other special collections.
  10. May serve as a branch librarian, including responsibility for branch program and service development.
  11. Updates website and social media content with announcements and events.
  12. Markets library materials, services, and programs through communications such as flyers, press releases, newsletters, event calendars, and social media.
  13. Communicates library policies and procedures clearly and effectively in a customer-friendly manner.
  14. Uses computers and online tools proficiently to provide library service.
  15. Upholds and promotes Superior Public Library Customer Service Standards.
  16. Promotes and maintains a safe and secure environment.
  17. Performs other duties as required by the Library Director.

Qualifications
Working knowledge of
  1. Professional library principles, practices, and procedures.
  2. Dewey Decimal Classification system.
  3. Computers and related devices, including peripherals and mobile technology.
  4. Internet navigation, database searching, and familiarity with emerging technologies.
  5. Knowledge of electronic resources and collections.
  6. Familiarity with word processing, simple desktop publishing and graphics programs.
Skills
  1. Skilled in providing direct patron assistance at service desks.
  2. Proficient in selecting, evaluating, and weeding materials.
  3. Ability to design and deliver engaging programs for all ages.
  4. Experience in assisting patrons with computers, databases, and digital resources.

Requirements/Special Requirements
Training and Experience
Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledges and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledges and abilities would be:
  1. Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree and one year of public library experience comparable to a Library Technician at Superior Public Library.
  2. A Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program preferred.

Special Requirements
  1. Driver's License Requirement: Must possess valid driver's license or be able to provide suitable transportation as approved by the department head.
  2. Residency Requirement: No residency requirement.
  3. Post Job Offer Drug Screen Requirement: Must pass a post job offer drug screen prior to hire.

1) Health/Dental Insurance: Will be effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment. The 2026 monthly health/dental insurance premiums (employee portion is 12.6%) to be deducted from the first 2 paychecks each month:
There are two health plans to choose from for 2026. Plan options and premiums are listed below. The premiums also include dental.
Medica - Passport Plan
Single: $142.66 (2 deductions of $71.33)
Employee + 1: $298.14 (2 deductions of $149.07)
Family: $456.44 (2 deductions of $228.22)
Medica - Essentia Choice Care Plan
Single: $115.02 (2 deductions of $57.51)
Employee + 1: $240.30 (2 deductions of $120.15)
Family: $368.32 (2 deductions of $184.16)
The City has a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with a Health Savings Account (HSA). The 2026 annual deductibles are: $3,400 for Single coverage & $6,800 for Employee+1 or Family coverage. The City will contribute $1,700/$3,400 of that annual deductible into your Health Savings Account (HSA) for 2026, which will carry over if not used and is always yours to use until spent. There is no proration on the deductible or the City's contribution.
2) WI Retirement System (WRS) - The WRS is among the best funded and best managed public pension systems in the country!: You will be required to make contributions to your WRS benefit at 7.20% (in 2026) of your gross wages. The City will contribute the balance of this benefit, 7.20% in 2026 (14.4% going into your retirement!).
3) Life Insurance: To be effective the first of the month following 30 days from the date of hire. Basic coverage (= 1 x annual salary) paid by City (must enroll to receive), ability to purchase four additional units of coverage (= 4 x annual salary) plus spouse/dependent coverage.
4) Paid Time Off:
Sick Leave: For newly hired employees, will accumulate one sick leave day/month and is available immediately as accrued.
5) Vacation: For newly hired employees, seven days of vacation will be prorated from date of hire for use immediately.
6) Paid Parental Leave: Up to six weeks of paid parental leave is available to employees to use following the birth or adoption of an employee's child, or placement of a foster child.
7) Holidays: Eleven holidays off with pay each calendar year plus three floating holidays.
8) Longevity pay when eligible as follows:
After five (5) years of service, employees will receive $.20 per hour in addition to their base salary;
After ten (10) years of service, employees will receive $.30 per hour in addition to their base salary;
After fifteen (15) years of service, employees will receive $.45 per hour in addition to their base salary;
After twenty (20) years of service, employees will receive $.65 per hour in addition to their base salary;
After twenty five (25) years of service, employees will receive $.90 per hour in addition to their base salary.
