What you will be doing!

• Leading the development of technical plans for the lifecycle management of radioactive waste.
• Leading the development of technical deliverables in support of the Integrated Waste Strategy, including supporting work related to waste characterization, processing, packaging, transportation, and disposal.
• Collaboratively developing plans that focus on safe, compliant, and effective management of nuclear liabilities while keeping an eye on the "big picture" of the CNL waste and fuel management mission.
• Performing comprehensive reviews and analysis of historical data from CNL sites, applying well-developed technical knowledge and experience, and making data-based recommendations for decisions with significant long-term impact on CNL operations and projects.
• Providing subject-matter expertise toward developing strategic and project plans for specific projects to ensure ongoing alignment with CNL's Waste Strategy, along with identifying opportunities and areas for improvement.
• Providing subject-matter expertise toward developing detailed Project Plans that incorporate technical and business-related concerns, such as Project Management Plans, Work Plans, Scope Documents, Business Cases, technical reports, and Strategy Documents.
• Interfacing with planning and technical staff in other parts of CNL to meet Chalk River Laboratories' needs coherently and integrally.
• Working with stakeholders, internal and external to CNL, to identify and leverage opportunities for technical partnerships and collaboration.
• Contributing significantly to the growth of knowledge and technological advancements at CNL in regard to radioactive waste management.
• Performing other duties, as expected of a senior-level professional, as assigned by your manager, in support of the overall Integrated Waste and Fuel Programs mission across CNL sites.
  

What we are looking for:

• Education
  • Bachelor's (Honours) in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing; or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
  • An advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D. in Science, Engineering, or Environmental Sciences) is considered a significant asset.
  • Advanced training or certification in project management is considered a significant asset.
• Experience
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) to twenty (20) years of experience in the nuclear industry, with significant experience in radioactive waste management.
  • Significant experience in strategy development and strategic planning for managing legacy nuclear liabilities.
  • Significant experience in technical evaluations and planning, preferably related to the lifecycle management of radioactive waste.
  • Significant experience in independent, responsible decisions and serving as a technical authority.
  • Significant experience in collecting, analyzing, and organizing complex data sets to make recommendations to resolve complex challenges based on experience, industry best practices, or innovative approaches.
  • Significant experience in leading discrete projects, with experience in all phases of project lifecycles (initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and controlling, and close-out).
  • Experience in developing original, ingenious, practical, and economical solutions to problems.
  • Experience in operations and/or field execution related to radioactive waste management is required.
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with an ability to adapt communications to the target audience ranging from technical professionals to technical industry working groups to the CNL Senior Leadership Team.
  • Expert-level ability to develop and implement credible, underpinned, and deliverable technical and project plans for complex environmental challenges.
  • Expert-level ability to review highly technical information and data, evaluate options and approaches, and develop solutions and recommendations from both a strategic and execution-level perspective.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop collaborative solutions, including effective engagement of stakeholders to build consensus and 'buy-in' on key decisions.
  • Expert-level understanding of the full lifecycle of radioactive waste for all three classes (LLW, ILW, and HLW).
  • Expert-level understanding of the Canadian nuclear industry, including the CNSC regulations and key projects/approaches employed by partner organizations (such as the NWMO).
  • Well-developed understanding of nuclear decommissioning and environmental remediation processes, approaches, and technologies.
  • Well-developed understanding of project management principles, including an understanding of the interaction of planning, execution, and close-out of multi-year projects.
  • Broad understanding of international benchmarks and approaches for radioactive waste management.
• Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Level 2 Secret requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."
    

Working Conditions:

• Working schedule: Five (5) days per week, seven and a half (7.5) hours per day for a thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hour work week.
• This position is part of the CRPEG Union and is governed by the terms and conditions outlined in the CRPEG Collective Agreement. As a member of this bargaining unit, you'll benefit from clear expectations around hours of work, wages, vacation, and other conditions that support a fair and consistent working environment.
• The physical and sensory demands of a Technical Planner would be normal for an office-based position. Limited on-site presence could include site walk-downs, tours, and presentations (2-6 hours of standing/walking).

Location: Hybrid Onsite Eligible

CNL works with employees across our Canadian locations to enable remote work when possible. This role requires that the majority of time worked be at CNL's Chalk River Laboratory site while also providing opportunities to work remotely, where possible, if desired by the employee.

Please note: This is a hybrid position, with a combination of remote work and onsite presence at our Chalk River Laboratory, Ontario.
