Team Lead - Physical Engineering (Utility Substations)
About the Position
As a Team Lead of Physical Engineering in the Utilities department, you will be responsible for managing a team comprised of engineers, drafters, and designers. A Team Lead's (TL's) primary responsibility will be the accurate, timely, and quality completion of physical/structural substation engineering scopes assigned to the team. The Team Lead will contribute to the development and refinement of internal processes and workflows that improve quality, consistency, and efficiency across the department. They are responsible for promoting, implementing, and reinforcing these processes while serving as a mentor and coach to their team. Team Leads support the professional and technical development of employees, encouraging accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Salary Range: $100,000 - $150,000 / year
The salary range above is based upon the Denver, Colorado labor market.
This opportunity is available to both local / in-office (Lakewood, CO) and full-time remote candidates.
Essential Responsibilities
Leadership Responsibilities
  • Oversees a team producing full detailed-design packages that include general arrangements, elevations, foundation plan and details, structure design and fabrication details, bus and connection details, bill of materials, building plan, conductor stringing tables, fence details, permitting, structure loading diagrams, construction details, and supporting calculation packages.
  • Manages and coordinates design activities, project planning, team level scheduling and optimization, and coordination between scopes of other disciplines for small to large scale projects to ensure adequate project coverage and operational efficiency.
  • Works with Directors to develop and maintain Workload Forecasting, ensuring an accurate active project list, milestone dates, and estimate to complete (ETC) hours.
  • Exemplifies ownership and accountability over your team's project portfolio, planning, and taking action to improve and maintain team performance.
  • Oversees the team's weekly budgets and track project finances to maintain fiscal responsibility.
  • Addresses and mitigate project risks to prevent escalation and ensure continuity.
  • Understands NEI processes, best practices, standards, and policies thoroughly and provides guidance to your team as required.
  • Keeps the team informed about the latest developments and ensures adherence to established standards.
  • Assesses team strengths and weaknesses, ensuring continuous development through training and coaching.
  • Maintains expert-level knowledge of NEI's QA/QC processes. Guides the team through these processes, ensuring all steps are followed and maintaining accountability for compliance on every project.
  • Supports business development, assists with marketing tasks, and supports the development of project proposals as needed.
  • Supports the client relationship as required to ensure ongoing satisfaction and collaboration.
Engineering Responsibilities:
  • Oversees the detailed physical design and engineering for all aspects of electric power substations including generating plants, utility transmission and distribution, and industrial and commercial facilities.
  • Reviews the work of your team members (engineers, designers, drafters) for general quality, accuracy, and adherence to NEI and/or client standards and processes.
  • Understands assigned scopes and develops engineering cost estimates, schedules, and assumptions to support change orders in coordination with project manager.
  • Investigates and resolves technical issues within the team to ensure project continuity.
  • Prepares a variety of documents and reports associated with projects including cost estimates, budget reports, and proposals.
  • Attend safety training and adhere to all safety rules and guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Must Have
  • Education: Bachelors in electrical or civil engineering or similar field from an accredited institution
  • Experience: 5+ years of engineering or relevant field experience
  • Licensure: FE is required, PE is preferred
  • Engineering expertise in physical substation design including substation electrical clearances, one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, physical layouts, section & elevations, bus configurations, control buildings, selection of substation equipment and any other aspect of HV and EHV substation physical engineering.
  • An understanding of structural substation engineering, including steel design, reinforced concrete design, and foundations is a plus.
  • The ability and desire to stamp drawings is highly preferred.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience adhering to National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), IEEE codes and standards, and relevant county, city, and state regulations.
  • Ability to develop staff through mentoring and coaching.
  • Possesses excellent critical thinking skills.
  • Commercial understanding of the engineering or construction industries
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with customers and internal personnel; exercises strong intrapersonal skills.
  • Must be self-motivated, well-organized, and skilled decision maker that is comfortable in a fast-paced design environment.
  • Possesses effective written and oral communications skills.
