What is a cog?

In a professional context, 'Cogs' is not typically a standalone job title. It is more commonly known as an abbreviation for 'Cost of Goods Sold' (COGS) in accounting and finance, referring to the direct costs associated with producing goods sold by a company. However, if you see 'Cogs' as a job title, it may refer to a specialist or analyst focused on managing, analyzing, or reporting COGS for a business. These professionals help organizations optimize production costs and improve profitability by monitoring inventory, sourcing, and manufacturing expenses. Always review the specific job description to understand the intended responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a COGS (Cost of Goods Sold) analyst?

To thrive as a COGS Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, a solid background in accounting or finance, and proficiency in data analysis, usually supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with ERP systems, financial modeling tools (such as Excel), and accounting software is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication help analysts deliver accurate insights and collaborate effectively with other teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring precise financial reporting and strategic decision-making that drive a company’s profitability.

What are the typical challenges faced by COGS (Cost of Goods Sold) analysts when collaborating with other departments?

COGS analysts often work closely with finance, operations, and procurement teams to ensure accurate cost tracking and reporting. One common challenge is aligning data and methodologies across departments, as discrepancies can impact financial statements. Additionally, COGS analysts may need to clearly communicate complex cost structures to non-financial stakeholders and adapt to changing supply chain dynamics. Building strong relationships and maintaining open communication with cross-functional teams is key to overcoming these challenges.

Job description

Role Description

Spun out of Stanford and MIT, Stellaromics is an innovative biotech startup founded in 2022 and located in Boston, MA. Our pioneering proprietary technology helps researchers and clinicians create comprehensive cellular maps enhancing our understanding of various diseases, with our flagship product STARmap and upcoming Pyxa™ suite of products. We have a passionate management team and committed investors who believe in our patented technology and overall mission to profoundly advance biomedical research and accelerate the discovery of life-saving treatments.

Key ResponsibilitiesMonth-End Close, Reporting, and Planning
  • Lead and support monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities, including financial statement preparation and reconciliations
  • Review and post journal entries across accruals, prepaids, fixed assets and depreciation, stock-based compensation, leases under ASC 842, and payroll
  • Analyze trends, accruals, reserves, and other key financial metrics to ensure accurate financial reporting
  • Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations, variance analyses, and supporting schedules
  • Ensure compliance with US GAAP and internal accounting policies while identifying opportunities to improve financial processes and controls
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting
  • Support external audits and collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure timely completion of audit requests
  • Partner cross-functionally with operations and finance teams to improve reporting accuracy and enhance decision-making
Inventory, Cost Accounting, and Revenue
  • Maintain inventory accounting for instruments and consumables, including standard costs, purchase price and manufacturing variances, and overall inventory valuation
  • Reconcile perpetual inventory to the general ledger and support cycle counts and physical inventory observations at internal and contract manufacturing sites
  • Assess and record excess and obsolete inventory reserves, scrap, and inventory held at customer, demo, or evaluation sites
  • Support revenue recognition under ASC 606 across instrument sales, consumables, and service contracts — including multi-element arrangements and deferred revenue roll-forwards
Audit, Tax, and Compliance
  • Own the annual audit or financial review request list end to end. Build the supporting schedules, respond to auditor questions, and track requests to closure
  • Coordinate with outside tax advisors on income tax provision support, sales and use tax filings
  • Maintain R&D expense detail and supporting documentation for R&D tax credit studies and grant reporting
Systems, Policy, and Documentation
  • Write and maintain accounting policies, technical memos, and desktop procedures that document the company’s positions under US GAAP
  • Identify and implement automation across close, AP, and reconciliation processes so manual effort does not scale with transaction volume
QualificationsRequired
  • 5+ years of accounting experience
  • Strong technical accounting fundamentals: accruals, prepaids, depreciation, deferred revenue, COGS
  • Experience with a mid-market ERP — NetSuite preferred; Sage Intacct, SAP, or similar considered
  • Comfortable working in an environment where processes are still being built and documented
  • Hands-on inventory and cost accounting experience — standard costing, inventory valuation and reserves, and reconciling perpetual inventory to the general ledger
Preferred
  • Experience in life sciences, biotech, medical devices, or manufacturing — familiarity with inventory and COGS accounting
  • Working knowledge of ASC 606, particularly for hardware or instrument-based revenue models
  • Exposure to a purchase order system such as Zip, Coupa, or similar
  • CPA (active or inactive)
  • Experience supporting an annual audit or financial review
  • Experience applying AI tools and automation to finance workflows — close and reconciliation automation, AP or expense tooling, or AI-assisted analysis, research, and documentation
  • Experience in a company that has scaled from early commercial revenue through audit readiness
