What is a cog railway?

A cog railway, also known as a rack railway, is a type of train system designed to operate on steep gradients that conventional trains cannot handle. It uses a toothed rack rail, usually positioned between the running rails, and a cogwheel or gear on the train that meshes with this rack. This system provides extra traction, allowing the train to safely ascend and descend very steep slopes, often found in mountainous regions. Cog railways are popular for transporting passengers to scenic mountain tops or remote locations. Many famous cog railways, such as those on Mount Washington in the USA and Jungfrau in Switzerland, offer unique travel experiences and stunning views.
