Rate depends on experience, credential, and the VA medical center you are assigned to support.

The Opportunity

We are seeking credentialed, experienced medical coders to support Health Information Management operations across the VA Sierra Pacific Network (VISN 21) — serving Veterans in Northern California, Nevada, Hawaii, and the Pacific Islands. This is 100% remote, off-site work performed from your home office anywhere in the United States; no travel to VA facilities is required.

Facility Locations Supported (VISN 21)

Coders are assigned to support one or more of the following VA medical center catchment areas. Your specific pay rate is tied to the wage determination for the facility area you are assigned to.

•      VA Palo Alto Health Care System — Santa Clara County, CA

•      VA San Francisco Health Care System — San Francisco & San Mateo Counties, CA

•      VA Northern California Health Care System — Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado & Yolo Counties, CA

•      VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System — Las Vegas / Clark County, NV

•      VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System — Reno / Washoe & Storey Counties, NV

•      VA Central California Health Care System — Fresno County, CA

•      VA Pacific Islands Health Care System — Honolulu, HI & American Samoa

What You'll Code

•      Coding quality audits — inpatient, professional fee, and outpatient

•      VERA (Veteran Equitable Resource Allocation) review coding

•      Census coding and prosthetics coding

What You Bring

•      Minimum 2 years' experience coding ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS in an acute care, outpatient, or tertiary care setting

•      Active credential required — AHIMA (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCS-P) or AAPC (CPC or CPC-H); AAPC holders must have passed the ICD-10 Proficiency Assessment

•      Formal training in anatomy & physiology, medical terminology, pathology/disease processes, pharmacology, and reimbursement methodologies

•      Ability to pass a federal (VA) Tier 1 background investigation and maintain system access credentials

•      Strong working knowledge of HIPAA, the Privacy Act, and 38 U.S.C. §§ 5701 & 7332 confidentiality requirements

•      U.S. work authorization — all coding must be performed physically within the United States; no offshore work permitted

Compensation & Benefits

Base pay ranges $24.00–$43.00 per hour, depending on experience, credential, and the VA facility area you support. This role is covered by the McNamara-O'Hara Service Contract Act; all positions include the applicable Health & Welfare benefit (currently $5.09/hr in most service areas; $1.96/hr in Hawaii and American Samoa) in addition to base pay.

•      Paid vacation after 1 year of service

•      Weekly pay, direct deposit

•      Fully remote — work from your home office anywhere in the U.S.
