What is a coding manager?

A Coding Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the medical coding staff in healthcare organizations. They ensure that patient medical records are accurately coded for billing and insurance purposes, supervise coders, and maintain compliance with regulations and standards. Coding Managers also provide training, monitor productivity, and implement policies to improve efficiency and accuracy within the coding department.

What does a coding manager do?

A coding manager oversees medical coding operations in a health care facility, such as a hospital or medical clinic. In this position, you ensure that coding staff perform their duties accurately and handle records and data according to health privacy regulations. As a manager, your responsibilities include hiring and training new medical coders and facilitating audits to assess employee performance and security and privacy practices. A coding manager may also work with facility administrators and medical staff to establish policies and procedures that improve medical records and coding accuracy. Some managers work for third-party contractors that provide coding services to medical facilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a coding manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Coding Manager, you need in-depth knowledge of medical coding standards (such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS), healthcare regulations, and typically a certification like CCS or CPC, plus leadership or management experience. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, coding compliance software, and auditing tools is crucial. Strong communication, organizational, and team leadership skills help manage coders and ensure high-quality work. These skills and qualifications are vital to maintain coding accuracy, regulatory compliance, and efficient workflow within healthcare organizations.

How does a coding manager typically balance direct coding responsibilities with team leadership and project management tasks?

A Coding Manager often splits their time between hands-on coding and overseeing the team's workflow, depending on the organization's needs. While they may still contribute to codebases, their primary responsibilities usually include mentoring developers, conducting code reviews, managing project timelines, and facilitating communication between technical teams and stakeholders. This role requires strong organizational skills to ensure both project progress and team development, and it's common for Coding Managers to gradually transition towards more strategic and leadership-focused duties as their teams grow.

While developers concentrate on individual tasks, Coding Managers handle team coordination and project delivery, making them suitable for those seeking leadership roles in software development.

Job description

About Us

MedKoder, LLC is a full-service medical coding management services provider based in Mandeville, Louisiana, specializing in expert medical coding for health systems, providers, and payers. MedKoder delivers accurate, efficient, and ethical coding, aiming to ensure accurate payment and financial peace for clients. With a team of certified coders throughout the United States, MedKoder emphasizes coding excellence, remote-work flexibility, and a positive workplace culture, earning high employee satisfaction ratings and awards with Best Places to Work in Modern Healthcare and City Business Best Places to Work.

Position Location: Mandeville, LA
Position Classification: Full-time

Description: The Sales Representative is responsible for driving revenue by selling products or services to new and existing customers. This role involves identifying leads, engaging prospects, closing deals, and maintaining client relationships to meet sales targets. The position requires strong communication skills, adaptability to modern sales tools, and a customer-focused approach.

Success in this position depends on exceptional active listening to uncover each client’s unique pain points—complex payer requirements, high denial rates, documentation gaps, or revenue leakage. The team member must excel at converting those insights into precise, high-impact recommendations powered by our leading technology, AI-enhanced coding tools, and comprehensive revenue cycle knowledge, and must be able to deliver compelling, solution-focused presentations to clients.

Candidates will be required to complete the work at our corporate headquarters location in Mandeville, Louisiana.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead Generation: Identify and qualify potential customers through cold calls, emails, social media (e.g., LinkedIn), or inbound leads.
  • Sales Presentations: Conduct engaging, high-impact presentations and product demonstrations (virtual and in-person) that clearly articulate the value of our services, using compelling storytelling and data-driven insights to captivate physicians, administrators, coders, and revenue cycle leaders.
  • Deal Closing: Negotiate terms, pricing, and contracts to finalize sales while meeting or exceeding quotas.
  • Relationship Management: Build and nurture trusted relationships by prioritizing consultative selling—asking insightful questions, uncovering pain points, and collaborating with clients to co-create customized implementation plans.
  • Staying technology-driven: Quickly mastering and effectively showcasing our innovative software tools, dashboards, analytics, and integration capabilities to demonstrate how they drive measurable results like faster reimbursements and compliance.
  • Managing the Full Sales Cycle: Prospecting clients, needs assessment to proposal development, negotiation, and closing—while consistently exceeding sales targets.
  • CRM Management: Log activities, track sales progress, and update client data in CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce, HubSpot).
  • Market Awareness: Stay informed on industry trends, competitors, and customer needs to refine sales strategies.
  • Collaboration: Work with marketing, customer success, or product teams to align on campaigns and ensure client satisfaction.
  • Compliance: References company policies; federal, state, and local laws; and industry resources to properly perform job duties.
  • Privacy: Protects patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Ethics: Conducts company business upholding MedKoder’s Core and Team Values.
  • All other duties, as assigned.

The ideal candidate also brings:

  • Proven sales experience in healthcare, ideally in revenue cycle management, medical coding/billing solutions, or related SaaS/technology services.
  • Exceptional presentation skills with the ability to deliver polished, audience-adapted demos and pitches that inspire confidence and action.
  • Strong active listening and empathy to connect authentically, identify unspoken needs, and position our offerings as the perfect fit.
  • A tech-savvy mindset—comfortable with CRM systems, demo software, data analytics, and emerging healthcare technologies.
  • Results-oriented drive, excellent communication, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Education/Experience Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent; bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, or related field preferred.

  • Position requires the ability to be an independent self-starter, and the ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Strong negotiation and objection-handling skills.
  • PLUS - Healthcare Industry Knowledge: A solid understanding of healthcare revenue cycle processes, medical coding/billing basics (e.g., ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS), payer requirements, compliance (HIPAA, etc.), and common challenges like denials or documentation issues. While not always needing clinical credentials, familiarity prevents credibility gaps when discussing how tools improve accuracy and reimbursements.
  • Prospecting, Negotiation, Closing: Proven ability to manage the full sales cycle: prospecting, needs assessment, proposal development, negotiation, and closing deals while hitting targets. Resilience under pressure and persistence are key in competitive healthcare sales.
  • Basic proficiency with CRM tools (e.g., Salesforce, Zoho) and sales tech (e.g., LinkedIn Sales Navigator).
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Strong time management, interpersonal, and organizational skills are required, in addition to the demonstrated ability to work proficiently and efficiently as a team player in a distributed team.
