As of Jul 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for code welder in the United States is $22.26, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.75 and $24.76 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Do welders make $100 an hour?

Code welders can earn $100 an hour or more, especially those with specialized skills, certifications, and experience working in high-demand industries like aerospace or oil and gas. However, typical rates vary widely based on location, project complexity, and employment type, with many welders earning less than this amount regularly.

What are Code Welders?

Code Welders are specialized professionals who join metal components together according to specific codes and standards, often set by industry organizations such as the American Welding Society (AWS) or the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Their work is critical in industries like construction, manufacturing, oil and gas, and shipbuilding, where safety and precision are paramount. Code Welders must pass rigorous tests to certify their skills and ensure their welds meet quality and safety requirements. They interpret blueprints, inspect welds for defects, and often work with a variety of welding processes and materials. This role demands a strong attention to detail and thorough knowledge of welding codes and procedures.

How much do coded welders make?

Coded welders, also known as certified welders, typically earn between $40,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and industry. Skilled welders with certifications in specific codes like ASME or AWS can earn higher wages, especially in specialized or high-demand environments.

What does a code welder do?

A code welder performs welding tasks that comply with specific industry codes and standards, often working on structural steel, pipelines, or pressure vessels. They use specialized tools and techniques, such as arc welding or TIG welding, and typically require certifications like AWS or ASME to ensure quality and safety in their work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Code Welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Code Welder, you need advanced welding skills, deep knowledge of welding codes and standards (such as ASME or AWS), and typically a relevant certification or apprenticeship. Proficiency with welding equipment, blueprint reading, and non-destructive testing tools is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills for ensuring high-quality work and safety. These skills and qualifications are crucial because Code Welders are responsible for producing welds that meet strict regulatory requirements, often in critical industries like construction, pipelines, and manufacturing.

What is the difference between Code Welder vs Pipe Welder?

AspectCode WelderPipe Welder
CertificationsAWS, ASME, API certifications often requiredTypically holds AWS and API certifications
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, manufacturing plants, shipyardsOil & gas facilities, pipelines, refineries
Industry UsageUsed across various industries including aerospace, construction, and manufacturingPrimarily in oil & gas, pipeline, and industrial sectors

Code Welders and Pipe Welders share many certifications and work environments, but Code Welders often work on a broader range of projects requiring compliance with specific codes and standards. Pipe Welders focus mainly on pipeline and industrial piping projects. Both roles are essential in construction and manufacturing industries, with overlapping skills but different specializations.

Can you make $300,000 as a welder?

Code welders or specialized welders with extensive experience, advanced skills, and certifications in high-demand industries such as oil and gas or aerospace can potentially earn $300,000 annually. However, most welders' salaries are significantly lower, and reaching this level typically requires working in high-paying regions, overtime, or supervisory roles.

What are common challenges faced by Code Welders when working on complex projects, and how can they be addressed?

Code Welders often encounter challenges such as interpreting intricate blueprints, maintaining high-quality welds under tight deadlines, and adapting to varying material specifications. Working on complex projects may require collaborating closely with engineers, quality inspectors, and other welders to ensure compliance with industry codes and safety standards. Successfully addressing these challenges involves strong attention to detail, effective communication, and a willingness to continuously update skills through training and certification.
