What is COBOL?

COBOL, short for Common Business-Oriented Language, is a computer programming language that’s used mainly in commerce and for business applications. COBOL was created to be able to work across platforms and operating systems. Although it was first released in 1959, it remains in wide use, especially in legacy software run on mainframe computers. Although COBOL is slowly being phased out as companies and government agencies migrate programs from mainframes to new platforms, and write the new programs in different languages, there are still significant industries and fields, such as banking, finance, and infrastructure, that rely on COBOL.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a COBOL developer?

To thrive as a COBOL Developer, you need strong proficiency in COBOL programming, understanding of mainframe systems, and experience with legacy application maintenance, usually backed by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with mainframe tools such as IBM z/OS, JCL, CICS, and database systems like DB2 is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with teams and managing complex, mission-critical systems. These skills are essential to ensure the stability, modernization, and ongoing support of enterprise applications that rely on COBOL.

What are some common challenges COBOL developers face when maintaining legacy systems?

COBOL developers often encounter challenges such as deciphering poorly documented code, integrating COBOL applications with modern technologies, and working with outdated hardware or software environments. Additionally, they may need to address performance issues or resolve bugs in systems that have been modified by multiple teams over decades. Strong problem-solving skills and collaboration with business analysts and IT teams are essential to ensure that mission-critical applications remain reliable and efficient.

Are COBOL jobs still in demand?

COBOL jobs are still in demand in industries such as banking, finance, and government, where legacy systems rely on COBOL for critical operations. Many organizations seek experienced COBOL programmers for maintenance, modernization, and integration projects, often requiring knowledge of mainframe environments and related tools.

Job description

Description:

This is an onsite role based in Durham, North Carolina.

Our client seeks a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer to prototype and deliver tools that accelerate the software development lifecycle, including solutions leveraging generative AI. You will build and evaluate code analysis capabilities using Python, TypeScript with Node.js and Angular, graph databases, and SQL while operating within modern Agile and cloud environments.

We are seeking a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer to join an innovation and R&D team within the financial services industry. This team is focused on exploring how emerging technologies—particularly Generative AI—can accelerate and modernize the software development lifecycle.

In this role, you’ll help design and build prototype tools that analyze existing codebases, uncover opportunities for modernization, and enable faster, smarter software delivery. A major focus of the work is a Python-based code analysis tool that leverages generative AI to understand current systems (including legacy technologies like COBOL) and support enhancement and modernization efforts—even for non-technical stakeholders.

The role contributes to proofs of concept and production-ready utilities that improve development, testing, and delivery outcomes for engineering teams. This is a one-year contract based in Durham, North Carolina.

Due to client requirements, applicants must be willing and able to work on a w2 basis. For our w2 consultants, we offer a great benefits package that includes Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits, 401k with company matching, and life insurance.

Rate: $60.00 to $65.00/hr. w2

Responsibilities:
  • Design, build, and enhance Python-based applications for code analysis and software lifecycle acceleration
  • Develop full stack solutions using TypeScript, Node.js, and Angular
  • Work with SQL-based relational databases (Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or similar)
  • Collaborate with cross-functional technical and non-technical partners in a fast-paced innovation environment
  • Build proofs of concept and prototypes that demonstrate the practical impact of new tools and technologies
  • Participate in Agile development practices and CI/CD workflows
  • Contribute to tooling that leverages Generative AI to understand existing applications and enable new feature development

Experience Requirements:
  • Approximately 5+ years of hands-on software development experience with strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and software composition.
  • Strong foundation in computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, software design)
  • Comfort working across multiple languages, frameworks, and evolving technical priorities
  • Ability to clearly communicate ideas and findings to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Proficiency in TypeScript with Node.js and Angular.
  • Experience with graph databases and Cypher, such as Neo4j.
  • Practical experience with SQL across Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or similar.
  • Experience with Agile development practices, CI/CD pipelines, and modern cloud platforms.
  • Docker, Kubernetes, or Helm (preferred).
  • Java (preferred).

Nice to Have

  • Experience or strong interest in AI/LLM technologies, including RAG-style solutions
  • Familiarity with COBOL or mainframe systems, especially from a modernization or analysis perspective
  • Exposure to Neo4j or graph databases and Cypher
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or Helm
  • Java experience

Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent experience.
