Winchester Thurston - City CampusWinchester Thurston School, a Junior Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 independent day school in Pittsburgh, announces a search for part-time seasonal Head and Assistant Coaches for the following sports:
  • Tennis, Head and Assistant Coach
Coaches provide instruction and supervision for students in a specific sport and in certain grade levels (Lower School, Middle School and/or Upper School). The individual in this position will interact with student athletes, teachers, parents, and the WT community. Coaches (Heads and Assistants) will work collaboratively with each other to foster an appreciation for and an attitude of good sportsmanship and a sense of pride in individuals, the team, the school, and the community. It is important for a coach to model non-discriminatory practices in all activities, respecting the worth, dignity, and individual differences of others.
The individual in this position serves in a manner that advances and upholds the mission and philosophy of Winchester Thurston School. Coaches perform under the general direction of the Head of School and under the supervision of the Director of Athletics.
A Head Coach is responsible for the following:
  • Plans, coordinates, and supervises student athletic practices in coordination with assistant coaches (if applicable), to help students improve their skills and strategy in the sport; ensures there are specific objectives for each practice
  • Works collaboratively with assistant coaches to establish expectations in order to ensure all roles and responsibilities are fulfilled
  • Attends and oversees all scheduled practices and games; supervises locker rooms when athletes are present
  • Takes attendance at all games and practices and reports this on a weekly basis to the Athletics Department so they know who is actively participating in the athletics program
  • Complies with and supports the rules, regulations and policies of the school, the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL), and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA)
  • Attends rules interpretation and all-conference meetings, as needed, as well as all required WT coaches' meetings
  • Accompanies students on all school-provided transportation to/from practices and games, ensuring there are at least 2 WT adults with student groups
  • Sends out a weekly game and practice schedule to players/parents and communicates any emergency changes promptly
  • Assists the Athletic Department's office with getting pre-season paperwork, including physical forms, by the completion of the first week of practice
  • Submits requested opponents and officials to the Director of Athletics
  • Submits requests to the Athletic Director for any needed equipment
  • Assists in maintaining high academic and behavioral standards for all student athletes
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities and reports needed equipment repair, replacement, or other safety concerns to the Director of Athletics; distributes and collects uniforms
  • Reports student disciplinary issues to the Director of Athletics
  • Keeps records of statistics for teams and players and submits them to the Athletics Department
  • Ensures any student who is injured receives appropriate first aid, working in collaboration with the athletic trainer
  • Attends all awards assemblies and identifies students who should receive awards, notifying the Athletics Department at least one week prior to the team's season ending
  • Reports scores and scorers to MaxPrep, the WT Athletics Office, and local media, working with the Marketing and Communications Office regarding requests for interviews or inquiries about WT teams or players
  • Performs other duties as assigned

An Assistant Coach is responsible for the following:
  • Provides support to the Head Coach in planning, coordinating and executing student athletic practices to help students improve their skills and strategy in the sport
  • Attends all scheduled practices and games; helps to supervise locker rooms when athletes are present
  • Complies with and supports the rules, regulations and policies of the school, the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL), and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA)
  • Attends rules interpretation and all-conference meetings, if requested, as well as all required WT coaches' meetings
  • Coordinates with the Head Coach to ensure that students are accompanied by at least 2 WT coaches/adults on all school-provided transportation to/from practices and games
  • Works with the Head Coach to promptly communicate changes regarding practices and game schedules with students/parents
  • Fosters an appreciation for and an attitude of good sportsmanship and a sense of pride in self, team, school and community
  • Works with the Head Coach to take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities and reports equipment repair, replacement, or other safety concerns to the Director of Athletics; assists in distributing and collecting uniforms
  • Reports student disciplinary issues to the Head Coach
  • Supports the Head Coach in keeping records of statistics for teams and players and submitting them to the Athletics Department
  • Helps to ensure any student who is injured receives appropriate first aid, working in collaboration with the athletic trainer
  • Attends all awards assemblies and supports the Head Coach in identifying students who should receive awards
  • Assists the Head Coach in keeping score and scorer records, and notifies the Head Coach regarding requests for interviews or inquiries about WT teams or players
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements for All Coaches
The successful candidate will have coaching experience in the sport for which they are applying. The individual in this position must exhibit emotional maturity, objectivity, and sensitivity to students, parents, and colleagues and their concerns. They must be able to handle responsibility, work independently as well as within a team, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, administration, colleagues, and other coaches/players. Excellent verbal and written communications skills are required.
This position will be compensated with a seasonal stipend through Winchester Thurston School's payroll. All coaches are required to complete employment paperwork, a tuberculin test, Pennsylvania-required clearances/training, and WPIAL-required trainings prior to the start of the coaching season and before any payroll can be processed.
