Job description

About Bloomingfoods Co-op Market
Bloomingfoods has been a community-owned cooperative (co-op) grocery store since 1976. In 1975, a group of people got together and created a business that would have a local focus and bring them all the great food that they could not find anywhere else. We remain dedicated to good food and good health, excellent customer service, local and regional producers, and giving back to the community we are all a part of. Food issues are central to our focus, and we want to keep folks up-to-date on what is happening in our community and the world - we strive to share more of what we know with others.
Our Mission
Bloomingfoods promotes healthy, high quality, sustainable, and environmentally-sound products at a fair price. Our commitment to sustainable agriculture, artisanal producers of local products, and delicious regional foods are a few of the things that set us apart. Our purpose and mission are:
  • To promote and encourage interest in the local growing of food crops and to provide for the consumers of Southern Indiana locally grown, nutritious food.
  • To educate the community to the economic, social, and other beneficial values inherent in organizing community services, and in offering locally produced consumer goods and food.
  • To help provide low-cost food and consumer services to low-income owner-members of the Co-op and the local community as a whole whenever possible.

About the role
  • PURPOSE: To provide the highest level of service possible to Bloomingfoods internal and external customers. To efficiently and effectively perform the daily duties of receiving, stocking, selling, replenishing, food preparation, and otherwise serving customers in a retail environment.

What you'll do
1. CUSTOMER SERVICE
  1. Provide internal and external customers with excellent service at all times.
  2. Treat people fairly, consistently, and with respect.
  3. Ensure efficient, informative, and friendly service in all areas according to established customer service vision and standards.
  4. Use appropriate and professional language, behavior, appearance, and overall conduct with or in the presence of customers, vendors, and store personnel according to BCS and store policies.
  5. Educate non-member customers about the co-op business model, mission, values, and the advantages of cooperative ownership.

2. RECEIVING, PROCESSING, AND STOCKING
  1. Inspect incoming deliveries for damage, expiration dates, and overall quality and report issues to the Department Manager.
  2. Unload, process, and sign for deliveries as necessary.
  3. Stock displays according to established schematics.
  4. Cull short-date, damaged, or low quality items and follow established recording and disposal procedures.
  5. Maintain well-organized displays, ensuring items are properly rotated, faced, and that fixtures are clean.
  6. Maintain clean, sanitary, and well-organized storage areas and work spaces.
  7. Operate dish machine, wash dishes and cooking equipment.
  8. Ensure accuracy of price labeling and signage; report discrepancies to POS.
  9. Follow established systems to ensure proper storage, handling and backstock-to-shelf rotation of all items.

3. SERVICE COUNTER & FOOD PREPARATION
  1. Provide a friendly, engaging and informative experience for every customer.
  2. Follow standard operating procedures in order to meet OSHA, health department, Organic, HAACP, COOL, and other relevant department standards.
  3. Practice knife and equipment safety at all times; including handling, cutting, and disposal.
  4. Prepare in-house deli foods following established recipes.
  5. Assemble and finish foods sent from the commissary for the food bar.
  6. Prepare special orders for customer pick-up and delivery.

4. LOCATION DUTIES
  1. Ensure carts and baskets are available to customers in designated areas.
  2. Perform various cleaning and maintenance duties including but not limited to the retail floor, dining areas, office and food prep areas, and facility grounds.
  3. Maintain restroom cleanliness throughout the day and ensure adequate supplies of tissue and towels.
  4. Monitor cooler and freezer temperatures and immediately report deviations from established norms.
  5. Perform opening and closing procedures including set-up and tear-down of displays, cleaning, and security procedures.
  6. Participate in regular store inventories.
  7. Follow co-op policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Work Rules and other co-op documents.
  8. Take responsibility for the effectiveness of your training and performance.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned by the Department or Store Manager or the Person-In-Charge.

5. COMMUNICATION
  1. Attend regular staff meetings.
  2. Provide effective communication to ensure productive, knowledgeable work teams.
  3. Maintain open communication links with customers to address inquiries and feedback.
  4. Stay informed of co-op and department news via staff bulletin board, Paycor accounts, and log books.
