Facilities Assistant
Location: Must be able to work at
any of our 4 sites in the Madison Metro Area
Status: Hourly non-exempt, represented
Supervision: No direct supervisory responsibility
Schedule: 32-40 hours; may be scheduled any day of the week. May be required to work early mornings or late nights as projects and work demand.
Special NOTE: This position will be an authorized driver of Co-op owned vehicles. After an offer of employment is made, the selected candidate will be required to undergo a
Motor Vehicle Record check and have an acceptable MVR history based on our Fleet Safety Program.

About the Role: As a Facilities Assistant, you will have the opportunity to work with other members of our Facilities Department to maintain our buildings, grounds, and equipment in topnotch condition.

What You'll Do: You will be responsible for carrying out efforts to maintain equipment and facilities at one or more locations in good working order. In addition, you'll collaborate with other members of the Facilities Department to support the following areas:
- Assist with maintenance of the physical plant including floors, roof, interior and exterior walls, lighting, electrical, plumbing and HVAC
- Assist with maintenance of all store equipment including appliances, shelving and display support
- Assist with maintenance of the grounds including parking lot, loading dock, trash and recycling areas
- Undertake special projects such as in depth cleaning jobs, painting, light carpentry, etc.
- Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them. Review blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs
- Follow and implement all necessary safety protocols and regulations
- Perform cleaning tasks
- Collect and dispose of trash and recycling
- Take on odd jobs and handle emergencies as they arise
- Monitor supplies and order more as necessary
- Assist in vendor management activities such as coding invoices, pursuing credits, and evaluation of vendor services
- Greet and offer assistance to customers
- Treat people fairly, consistently and with respect
- Abide by all co-op policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook and other company documents
- Participate in required training and meetings
- Keep sites orderly and clean
- Perform all other duties as assigned by a supervisor
What You Bring: This role requires the following education, experience, skills and abilities:
- At least 1 year of custodial, maintenance or other related experience
- Thorough knowledge of construction, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or similar relevant field
- Outstanding customer service skills
- Willingness to be open, to learn and take on new responsibilities
- Regular, predictable attendance
- Effective communication skills in English
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions
- Demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to handle multiple demands
- Adherence to deadlines
Nice-to-Haves: It's a bonus if you have one or more of the following:
- Previous experience working as a Facilities Assistant or Maintenance Technician
- Experience or knowledge in a grocery store or cooperative

Physical Requirements:
- Standing, walking, bending, and reaching
- Using hands or fingers to handle or feel
- Specific vision ability: close vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception and adjust to focus
- Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds at times
Work Environment: Fast paced retail environment with food service equipment and coolers and in cold/hot working conditions (i.e. cooler or near heated surfaces). Other high to moderate noise including but not limited to computers, cash registers, paging, telephones, music and human voices.
