Hatch is seeking a Lead Civil Engineer in Long Beach, CA. The Lead Civil Engineer will be part of an engineering team providing engineering services to large and small projects. The role includes the exciting opportunity to grow the team of civil engineering personnel.
In general, the Lead Civil Engineer is responsible for preparing engineering calculations, technical specifications, data sheets and reports for both front end planning studies and the detailed engineering phase for multi-disciplinary projects. In the role of Lead Civil Engineer, you will provide support to the Engineering Manager and be responsible for supervising a team of civil and hydrotechnical engineers as well as designers and draftspersons. The role will also entail management roles that require obtaining approvals from local government councils/authorities, engaging with Clients and Contractors, handling site queries.
The Lead Civil Engineer provides leadership and assists in the resolution of all technical issues related to the discipline. The Lead Civil Engineer participates in a wide range of projects that may cover earthworks, residential and commercial developments, utilities including pump stations, and drainage layouts for both front end planning and the detailed engineering phase for multi-discipline projects.
As the successful candidate, you will:
  • Assist the Engineering Manager with the delivery of project requirements as they relate to scope, quantities, cost and schedule
  • Prepare Engineering Work Packages (EWPs) in consultation with the Engineering Manager
  • Prepare/assign work tasks (via signed off EWPs) to individuals and continuously monito progress and quality
  • Develop the manpower schedule to be part of the engineering and project schedule in conjunction with the other disciplines
  • Develop and maintain the civil work plan for insertion into the project specific execution plan
  • Assist in the compilation and delivery of monthly engineering status reports
  • Represent the discipline in the project engineering coordination meetings
  • Prepare and/or review project procedures, standard specifications and design criteria
  • Review and evaluate technical work prepared by junior engineers, intermediate engineers, designers, technicians and technologists
  • Ensure co-ordination with designers and engineers within the civil discipline and with other disciplines
  • Ensure relevant technical experts are involved in the design process as required and facilitate the sharing of technical expertise both across projects and other Hatch offices
  • Responsible for a team performing conceptual and detailed engineering design, engineering calculations and technical specifications,
  • Contribute to technical memos, reports and close out reports, within areas of expertise
  • Provide input to engineering, operating and capital cost estimates
  • Participate in and contribute to design reviews
  • Carry out assigned tasks within budget and schedule
  • Stamp/sign documents and drawings as required and as qualifications allow
  • Undertake construction supervision and management dependent upon project demands
  • Support of site engineering team to provide technical solutions and timely response to technical queries
  • Work to ensure the implementation of safety in design and integrity principles in design documentation

You bring to the role:
  • A recognized degree in civil engineering from an accredited university
  • 15+ years' experience in relevant civil engineering design and management
  • Experience working on projects in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in the use of Civil3D, OpenRoads and Microstation
  • Good planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to function with minimal supervision
  • Good safety awareness

Salary Range: $175,000 - $200,000 (Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
