Cnc Wire Cut Programmer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC wire cut programmer?

To thrive as a CNC Wire Cut Programmer, you need strong knowledge of CNC programming, mechanical drawing interpretation, and precision measurement, often backed by a diploma or certification in mechanical engineering or machining. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) machines, and specific controls like FANUC or Mitsubishi is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help professionals excel in this role. These skills ensure high accuracy, efficient workflow, and effective collaboration with machinists and engineers in a manufacturing environment.

What are some typical challenges faced by CNC wire cut programmers, and how can they be managed?

CNC Wire Cut Programmers often encounter challenges related to programming complex geometries, maintaining tight tolerances, and optimizing machining cycles to minimize waste and downtime. Managing these challenges requires a deep understanding of both the software and the physical machining process, as well as proactive troubleshooting and communication with the production team. Staying updated on new technology and regularly reviewing machining strategies can also help mitigate common issues. By embracing continuous learning and teamwork, programmers can enhance efficiency and ensure high-quality results in fast-paced manufacturing settings.

What is a CNC wire cut programmer?

A CNC Wire Cut Programmer is responsible for creating and optimizing wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) programs to cut precision parts from metal and other conductive materials. They interpret engineering drawings, select appropriate cutting parameters, and use CAD/CAM software to generate toolpaths. In addition, they set up and troubleshoot CNC wire cut machines to ensure accuracy and efficiency. This role requires knowledge of machine operations, material properties, and quality control standards to produce high-precision components.

Job description

Overview

We're hiring a Wire EDM Programmer / Machinist for our precision medical machine shop.

You'll program, set up, and run wire EDM machines on high-mix, low-volume jobs, machining complex medical parts to tight tolerances. You'll own each job from print to first-piece inspection - programming the cut, designing and building the fixturing, indicating parts in, and running the machine. You'll also set up and run CNC mills and lathes, often operating multiple machines at once.

You don't need to walk in able to run every machine. We hire for fundamentals and teach the rest.

Why Join Us

  • Hone Your Craft: Master wire EDM, 5-axis, mill-turn, and Swiss-style machining under one roof
  • Own the Whole Process: Program, fixture, cut, and inspect your work, start to finish
  • Free Medical: 100% company-paid medical care

Hiring on 1st Shift

  • Monday - Friday

Compensation

  • $70-$75k / yr
  • Standard 50 hour week (automatic overtime)
  • Paid hourly

Responsibilities

  • EDM Programming: Program wire paths, skim passes, tapers, and offsets from prints.
  • Fixture Design: Design and build EDM workholding for low-volume medical parts.
  • EDM Setups: Square and indicate fixtures, pick up edges, thread wire.
  • CNC Setups: Independent setups and fixture changeouts on mills and lathes.
  • Multi-Machine Operation: Run EDM alongside mills and lathes at the same time.
  • Inspection: First-piece inspections using gages, CMMs, and Keyence vision systems.
  • Documentation: Log dimensional data and reports in Epicor MRP.
  • Maintenance: Maintain coolants, dielectric water, wire, guides, and filters daily.

Requirements

Qualifications

Required

  • 2+ years wire EDM programming and setup experience
  • Able to indicate fixtures to tight positional tolerances
  • Experience designing or building EDM fixtures
  • CNC milling and/or lathe setup experience
  • Strong blueprint and part print reading
  • Proficiency with micrometers, calipers, and pin gages
  • Basic CMM operation for part inspection

Preferred

  • CAD/CAM EDM programming: Esprit, Mastercam, or PEPS
  • Makino, Sodick, Mitsubishi, Fanuc, or GF wire EDM experience
  • 4-axis, small-wire, and lights-out EDM experience
  • Medical, aerospace, automotive, or military industry experience
  • Experience working in ISO 9001 shops
  • Strong GD&T and CMM reporting skills
  • Hands-on 5-axis milling experience
