What is a CNC Training job?

A CNC Training job involves teaching individuals how to operate and program Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines. Trainers provide hands-on instruction in machine setup, tooling, programming, and safety procedures. The role may be in a classroom, workshop, or on-site at manufacturing facilities. CNC trainers help students or employees develop the skills needed for precision machining and production efficiency.

Is CNC training worth it?

CNC training is valuable for those seeking careers as CNC operators or programmers, as it provides essential skills in operating and programming CNC machines, often leading to higher-paying jobs. Certification and hands-on experience improve employability in manufacturing and machining industries. The training typically covers tools, safety protocols, and industry standards, making it a worthwhile investment for many job seekers in this field.

What career advancement opportunities are typically available after completing CNC training?

Once you complete CNC training, you may start in entry-level machinist or operator roles, but there are ample opportunities for growth as you gain experience and expertise. Many professionals advance to CNC programmer, setup technician, or supervisory positions, and with additional education or certifications, roles in quality control or manufacturing engineering are also attainable. Continuous learning and staying updated on the latest technologies can accelerate career progression. Additionally, experienced CNC professionals are often sought after for team leadership or training positions due to their hands-on knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Cnc Training position, and why are they important?

To thrive in CNC Training, individuals need a solid understanding of machining principles, blueprint reading, and basic math, often supported by a high school diploma or technical certification. Familiarity with CNC machines, G-code programming, and CAD/CAM software is highly valuable, with certifications such as NIMS or OSHA being advantageous. Excellent attention to detail, eagerness to learn, and strong problem-solving skills are important soft qualities. These skills ensure the trainee can efficiently learn industry-standard processes, operate complex equipment safely, and adapt quickly to manufacturing environments.

How much is CNC training?

CNC training programs typically cost between $1,000 and $7,000, depending on the length, depth, and provider of the course. Some programs include hands-on experience with CNC machines and may offer certifications upon completion.

How much is a CNC machinist paid?

CNC machinists typically earn an average salary ranging from $40,000 to $70,000 per year, depending on experience, location, and skill level. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced operators with certifications can earn higher wages, especially when working with advanced CNC machines and tools.

How long does it take to become a CNC?

Becoming proficient in CNC machining typically requires a few months to a year of training, depending on the program and prior experience. Most CNC operators complete technical training or certification programs that last from several weeks to a year, gaining skills in machine operation, programming, and safety. Advanced roles or programming positions may require additional on-the-job experience or specialized certifications.

Job Title: CNC Programmer

Job Description

This full-time, on-site role focuses on creating and optimizing CNC programs, performing first-piece setups, and supporting both milling and mill turn operations in a precision machine shop environment. You will work extensively with Mastercam for 4- and 5-axis milling and mill turn lathes, ensuring accurate setups, smooth workflow, and high-quality output across a diverse mix of defense and aerospace components. Success in this role requires strong technical expertise, hands-on machining experience, and the ability to collaborate effectively with operators, engineering, inspection, and assembly teams.

Responsibilities

  • Review technical drawings, 3D models, and specifications to assess manufacturability and define optimal machining strategies.
  • Program CNC machines using Mastercam, with a primary focus on 4- and 5-axis milling and mill turn lathes.
  • Perform machine setups and complete first article inspections for each operation to validate programs and processes.
  • Operate CNC machines during periods of lower programming demand to support production needs.
  • Support machine operators by clarifying programming intent, answering questions, and ensuring clear communication on process requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, inspection, and assembly teams to ensure product quality and adherence to specifications.
  • Ensure machined components meet established cycle time, cost, and quality targets.
  • Assist in developing tooling strategies, workholding solutions, and process improvements to enhance efficiency and repeatability.
  • Complete root cause analysis and corrective action reports when issues arise, and implement corrective measures.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and training to team members to build programming and machining capability.
  • Help stabilize and support hybrid/toolmaker and special projects areas by contributing technical expertise and process guidance.
  • Maintain compliance with ITAR regulations and company quality standards at all times.
  • Support adherence to internal and customer schedule requirements, including overtime as needed.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5 years of CNC programming experience using Mastercam, including 4- and 5-axis milling and mill turn lathes.
  • At least 5 years of CNC machining experience, including machine operation and setup knowledge.
  • Proficiency in Mastercam programming for complex parts and multi-axis operations.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, blueprints, GD&T, and manufacturing specifications accurately.
  • Ability to review and work from 3D models (SolidWorks) and 2D drawings (AutoCAD or similar).
  • Experience performing first article inspections and verifying parts against drawings and specifications.
  • Hands-on experience with mills, lathes, and CNC machining centers in a production environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in both programming and machining.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with inspection, operators, and engineering departments.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within cross-functional teams.
  • Commitment to meeting internal and customer schedule requirements and production deadlines.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with mill-turn equipment and complex multi-axis machining strategies.
  • Familiarity with Epicor ERP or similar enterprise resource planning systems.
  • Experience conducting or supporting root cause and corrective action investigations.
  • Exposure to hybrid/toolmaker work and special projects that require creative fixturing and process development.
  • Comfort working directly on the shop floor and engaging with production teams in real time.
  • Strong communication skills to clearly explain programming decisions and process changes to operators and other stakeholders.
  • Solid understanding of inspection methods and quality assurance practices related to CNC machining.
  • Experience with defense and aerospace components or other high-precision, high-compliance industries.

Why Work Here?

You will join a hands-on, collaborative machine shop environment where your programming expertise directly influences product quality and on-time delivery. The organization values cross-functional teamwork, continuous improvement, and knowledge sharing, giving you the opportunity to mentor others and shape machining processes. You will work with advanced multi-axis equipment and modern software tools, with the chance to contribute to complex, high-impact projects in a stable and growing operation.

Work Environment

This role is based on-site in a machine shop environment, working primarily with CNC mills, lathes, and multi-axis equipment. The standard shift runs from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with overtime available as needed to support production and schedule requirements. You will spend most of your time on the shop floor, moving between programming stations, machines, and inspection areas, and working closely with operators, engineering, and quality teams. The environment is fast-paced and production-focused, with an emphasis on safety, precision, and adherence to ITAR and company quality standards. Appropriate shop attire and adherence to safety procedures and protective equipment requirements are expected.
