What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machinist Inspector, and why are they important?

To excel as a Machinist Inspector, you need strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and experience with quality control procedures, often supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with inspection tools such as micrometers, calipers, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), and industry standards like ISO 9001 is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying defects and coordinating with production teams. These capabilities ensure components meet strict specifications, uphold safety standards, and maintain efficient manufacturing processes.

What are some common challenges faced by Machinist Inspectors during quality control processes?

Machinist Inspectors often face the challenge of maintaining precision and consistency across large production runs, especially when working with tight tolerances. They must remain vigilant for subtle defects or measurement deviations and be prepared to troubleshoot root causes, which requires a thorough understanding of both machinery and quality standards. Additionally, balancing time constraints with the need for meticulous inspections can be demanding, and effective communication with machinists and engineers is essential to address and resolve any quality issues promptly.

What is a Machinist Inspector?

A Machinist Inspector is a skilled professional responsible for examining and measuring machined parts to ensure they meet precise engineering specifications and quality standards. They use specialized tools and instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify dimensions and tolerances. Machinist Inspectors play a critical role in manufacturing by ensuring products are accurate and free from defects before they move to the next stage of production or shipment. Their work helps maintain quality control and compliance with industry regulations.

You will deliver precision machined parts that support the client's production objectives and defense systems. You will work on site on 1st shift (core hours 5:00 AM - 1:30 PM), collaborating with machinists, inspectors, and assembly teams to meet tolerance and schedule targets. Your work ensures components meet specifications and assembly readiness for downstream teams.

Here's How You'll Make an Impact on the Team

  • Select, align, and secure fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, and materials for machining operations.
  • Calculate and set machining controls (speed, feed, coolant flow, depth/angle of cut) or edit NC programs as required.
  • Start and observe machine operation, detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance conditions, and make adjustments.
  • Verify conformance of finished workpieces to specifications using inspection instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges).
  • Perform trial runs, maintain and clean machining equipment, and create tooling and holding fixtures as needed.
  • Assist other departments as assigned, including assembly, bonding, soldering, and packaging tasks.
Here's What You'll Need to Be Successful in This Role

  • Six (6) or more years' experience operating and setting up conventional and CNC lathes, mills, and other machine shop equipment.
  • Training in CNC machining, inspection techniques, and shop safety.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, manuals, and procedure documents.
  • Proficiency with inspection instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges) and ability to inspect your own work to hold close tolerances.
  • Ability to perform basic and applied math relevant to geometry, trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  • Ability to work independently, produce quality parts, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Physical ability to perform job duties (stand, walk, lift up to 25 pounds, close vision, color vision) and tolerate shop noise and exposure to mechanical parts and particles.
Here's What Else Might Help You Out
  • Knowledge of Fadal and Haas machines.
  • Experience with 4-axis machining.
  • Experience with ESD controls, resistance welding, microscope work, soldering, epoxy mixing, bonding, and handling classified assemblies.
