What is a CNC SolidWorks professional?

CNC SolidWorks professionals are experts who use SolidWorks, a 3D CAD (computer-aided design) software, to design parts and assemblies that will be manufactured using CNC (computer numerical control) machines. They create detailed models and technical drawings, ensuring designs are optimized for CNC machining processes. These professionals bridge the gap between engineering design and manufacturing, making sure that digital models can be accurately produced by automated machinery. Their work involves both technical design skills and an understanding of manufacturing techniques.

How do CNC SolidWorks professionals typically collaborate with machinists and engineers during the product development process?

CNC SolidWorks professionals play a vital role in bridging the gap between design and manufacturing by working closely with both machinists and engineers. They are responsible for creating detailed 3D models and technical drawings, which are then reviewed with engineers for accuracy and feasibility. Collaboration with machinists is essential to ensure that the designs are manufacturable, selecting appropriate materials, and optimizing tool paths. Regular communication and feedback loops help address any design challenges early, resulting in smoother production runs and reduced errors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC SolidWorks specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CNC SolidWorks Specialist, you need strong proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD), machining processes, and a solid understanding of engineering drawings, typically backed by a technical diploma or degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with SolidWorks software, CNC programming languages (such as G-code), and experience with CAM software and CNC machine operation are essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure precise product design, efficient manufacturing workflows, and smooth collaboration between engineers and machinists.

Job description

CNC Programmer
Our client is a well-established, third-generation family-owned precision sheet metal fabrication and contract manufacturing company with decades of industry experience and approximately 180 employees. The organization operates a highly integrated manufacturing environment supporting customers across industries including telecommunications, electronics, medical, transportation, automotive, and office equipment. With more than 200,000 square feet of manufacturing space, the company provides services spanning design for manufacturing, tooling, sheet metal fabrication, stamping, machining, robotic welding, assembly, finishing, and high-volume production. This is a collaborative, values-driven organization that emphasizes quality, teamwork, accountability, and an internal customer-service mindset. The position is onsite on 1st shift at the company's Rochester-area facility, with occasional flexibility to support operations during an upcoming facility consolidation.
About the Role
The CNC Blanking Programmer will support the programming and production of precision sheet metal components, working closely with the manufacturing floor to ensure programs are accurate, efficient, and production-ready.
Responsibilities
  • Program multiple types of CNC equipment, including press brakes, laser turrets, and blanking equipment
  • Build and optimize nests using customer-supplied models, drawings, and prints
  • Utilize SolidWorks and CNC programming software to develop production-ready programs
  • Work with Amada VPSS 4iE Blank for blanking and nesting applications
  • Support press brake programming and other sheet metal programming requirements
  • Respond to shop-floor programming questions and assist with setup-related issues
  • Close Non-Conformance Material Reports (NCMRs) and address pre-production review action items
  • Review customer models and prints to ensure manufacturability and programming accuracy
  • Collaborate with engineering, production, and other internal teams to resolve manufacturing issues
  • Help identify opportunities to improve programming efficiency, material utilization, and production processes
  • Support the manufacturing team during the company's planned facility transition as needed

Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will have hands-on CNC programming experience within a sheet metal fabrication environment, along with strong CAD skills and the ability to work collaboratively with production personnel.

Required Skills
  • Previous CNC programming experience is required
  • SolidWorks experience is required
  • Sheet metal fabrication experience is required; machining-only CNC experience will not meet the requirements
  • Experience programming CNC blanking, laser, press brake, or similar sheet metal equipment
  • Experience working from customer drawings, models, and prints
  • Strong understanding of sheet metal fabrication and manufacturing processes
  • Amada VPSS 4iE Blank experience is strongly preferred
  • Experience with Dr. Abe Bend is highly preferred
  • Radan experience is highly preferred
  • Press brake programming experience is a plus
  • Plex experience is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Ability to troubleshoot programming and production issues
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Stable employment history and demonstrated commitment to previous employers
