How much do cnc programming jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for cnc programming in Colorado is $32.55, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $26.78 and $36.63 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is CNC programming?

CNC programming involves creating detailed instructions that guide computer numerical control (CNC) machines in the manufacturing of parts and products. CNC programmers use specialized software to convert design blueprints into precise code, which tells machines how to move, cut, and shape materials. This process ensures high accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency in manufacturing. CNC programming is essential in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and metal fabrication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC programmer?

To thrive as a CNC Programmer, you need strong mathematical aptitude, mechanical understanding, and experience with blueprint reading, often supported by a degree or certification in manufacturing technology or a related field. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, G-code programming, and CNC machine operation is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for optimizing processes and minimizing errors. These skills ensure efficient production, high-quality output, and smooth collaboration with engineering and production teams.

What are some common challenges CNC programmers face when transitioning from manual machining to automated CNC environments?

CNC Programmers often find that moving from manual machining to CNC environments requires adapting to new software, precision expectations, and troubleshooting skills. Unlike manual machining, CNC programming involves understanding G-code, machine-specific software, and simulation tools, as well as resolving issues related to tool paths and machine errors. Collaboration with machinists and engineers becomes more critical to ensure that the programmed designs are both manufacturable and efficient. Staying updated with evolving technology and continuous learning are essential for a smooth transition and long-term success.

What is the difference between Cnc Programming vs Cnc Machinist?

AspectCnc Programming

Cnc Programming involves writing and editing code to control CNC machines, focusing on creating precise instructions for manufacturing parts. Cnc Machinists operate CNC machines, set up equipment, and manually adjust tools to produce parts based on the programs. Both roles require knowledge of CNC operations, often share certifications like CNC operator licenses, and work in manufacturing environments. While Cnc Programmers focus on coding and software, Cnc Machinists handle machine operation and adjustments. They often collaborate, with programmers providing instructions for machinists to execute.

Are CNC programmers in demand?

CNC programmers are in demand due to the ongoing need for precision manufacturing in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and medical devices. Skilled programmers who can operate CAD/CAM software and work with CNC machines are sought after, especially as automation increases in manufacturing environments.

How much do CNC programmers earn?

CNC programmers typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled programmers with certifications and proficiency in CAD/CAM software can earn higher salaries, especially in manufacturing environments with complex machinery.

Job description

Welcome to Lava Island
Lava Island is an indoor play oasis where kids fly across trampolines, vanish into towering jungle gyms, dive into foam pits, and race down slides while families share pizza and celebrate birthdays in the party rooms. It is loud, bright, and full of energy.
Every trampoline, deck, slide, and play piece is made by hand. Active Play Solutions (APS) is the team that makes them.
The Job
You will run the cutting machines on the APS production floor in Denver. That means the steel cutting machine and the CNC / beam saw. You will load stock, set up the program for each job, run the machine, and produce the precision-cut components that go into every new park.
This is a real machinist seat, not a button-pusher job. You will read cut files, confirm them against work orders, monitor the cuts, and keep the machines running clean. You will work alongside the Production Manager and the rest of the production crew.
Why APS
  • Real product. The work you do today shows up in a park kids will play in.
  • Cross-training. Strong CNC skills are the floor, not the ceiling. You can grow across the production floor over time.
  • Steady company. APS is growing, and we are hiring for the long run.
  • Predictable schedule. Day shift in our Denver warehouse. No travel.
  • Benefits. Per company benefits program.

What You Will Do
  • Run the steel cutting machine and the CNC / beam saw.
  • Load stock, set up programs, monitor cuts for accuracy and safety.
  • Read cut files from the Automation Designer and confirm each program against the work order.
  • Catch your own quality issues. Do not pass problems downstream.
  • Keep the machines clean, maintained, and running. Surface preventive maintenance and repair needs to the Production Manager.
  • Cross-train into other stations and production groups over time.
  • Follow all safety protocols. Cutting equipment is the heaviest, most safety-critical work on the floor.

What You Need
  • CNC or industrial cutting machine experience. Typically two or more years on CNC routers, beam saws, plasma or steel cutters, or similar programmed cutting equipment.
  • Comfort loading, programming, and running automated cutting machines.
  • Working knowledge of safe operation around heavier industrial equipment, including PPE and lockout procedures.
  • Reliable. Show up, hold a steady pace, do the work.
  • Open to cross-training into other production groups over time.

Experience cutting both wood and metal is a plus. Familiarity with G-code or common CNC programming environments helps. So does bilingual (English / Spanish).
Ready to Join the Crew?
If you want a real cutting machine seat in a Denver manufacturing company making the stuff kids play on, we want to meet you. Apply today.
