How much do cnc programming jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for cnc programming in Denver, CO is $31.86, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $26.25 and $35.87 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC programmer?

To thrive as a CNC Programmer, you need strong mathematical aptitude, mechanical understanding, and experience with blueprint reading, often supported by a degree or certification in manufacturing technology or a related field. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, G-code programming, and CNC machine operation is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for optimizing processes and minimizing errors. These skills ensure efficient production, high-quality output, and smooth collaboration with engineering and production teams.

How much do CNC programmers earn?

CNC programmers typically earn between $45,000 and $75,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled programmers with certifications and proficiency in CAD/CAM software can earn higher salaries, especially in manufacturing environments with complex machinery.

Are CNC programmers in demand?

CNC programmers are in steady demand due to their essential role in manufacturing and precision machining. The need for skilled operators with knowledge of CAD/CAM software and machine operation continues to grow as industries seek efficient and accurate production processes.

What is CNC programming?

CNC programming involves creating detailed instructions that guide computer numerical control (CNC) machines in the manufacturing of parts and products. CNC programmers use specialized software to convert design blueprints into precise code, which tells machines how to move, cut, and shape materials. This process ensures high accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency in manufacturing. CNC programming is essential in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and metal fabrication.

What are some common challenges CNC programmers face when transitioning from manual machining to automated CNC environments?

CNC Programmers often find that moving from manual machining to CNC environments requires adapting to new software, precision expectations, and troubleshooting skills. Unlike manual machining, CNC programming involves understanding G-code, machine-specific software, and simulation tools, as well as resolving issues related to tool paths and machine errors. Collaboration with machinists and engineers becomes more critical to ensure that the programmed designs are both manufacturable and efficient. Staying updated with evolving technology and continuous learning are essential for a smooth transition and long-term success.

What is the difference between Cnc Programming vs Cnc Machinist?

AspectCnc Programming

Cnc Programming involves writing and editing code to control CNC machines, focusing on creating precise instructions for manufacturing parts. Cnc Machinists operate CNC machines, set up equipment, and manually adjust tools to produce parts based on the programs. Both roles require knowledge of CNC operations, often share certifications like CNC operator licenses, and work in manufacturing environments. While Cnc Programmers focus on coding and software, Cnc Machinists handle machine operation and adjustments. They often collaborate, with programmers providing instructions for machinists to execute.

Job description

CNC Programmer - Make the Code Work
At Boom Supersonic, we're building Superpower - a 42-megawatt industrial gas turbine that demands some of the most precise CNC programming work in the industry. Our first Superpower prototype is being assembled now and scheduled for first fire this year. The production facility you'll work in is being built in parallel - so that when the prototype proves out, we're ready to build the first production units without losing a beat.
This is a CAM-depth role. You'll work primarily in Hypermill, programming 5-axis simultaneous, mill-turn, and complex 3+2 operations on Superpower components. You'll make deliberate toolpath decisions, verify your work in simulation with rigor, and produce setup documentation that a machinist can run without calling you.
You'll work closely with the Applications Engineer - not as an executor but as a collaborator. When the toolpath won't deliver what the process spec intends, you'll say so and propose something that will. When a machinist tells you the program isn't performing on the machine, you'll understand why.
We're building the programming function at Boom, which means you'll have real input into how it works - naming conventions, revision control, template structure, tooling libraries. If you like the software side of machining and want to go deep in a CAM system serious about complex geometry, this is the right place.
What we're looking for:
  • CNC programming experience with demonstrated CAM system depth - not just button familiarity.
  • Hypermill experience is a strong differentiator. Mastercam, ESPRIT, or NX CAM experience is transferable.
  • 5-axis simultaneous programming experience - or strong reasoning ability about 5-axis geometry for early-career candidates.
  • Ability to read G-code output and identify post issues without running the machine.
  • Documentation discipline - setup sheets that machinists can run without calling for help.

What you'll own:
  • CAM programming in Hypermill for Superpower IGT components - 5-axis, mill-turn, 3+2.
  • Simulation verification - systematic review before any program reaches the machine.
  • Setup documentation - complete enough that someone else can run the job.
  • Program revision control - the machine always has the right version.
  • AE collaboration - toolpath feedback that shapes the process spec over time.

Compensation
The Base Hourly Range for this position is $45/hr - $55/hr. Actual rate will vary based on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Boom's total rewards package for employees. Other rewards may include long-term incentives/equity, a flexible PTO policy, and many other progressive benefits.
There is no set deadline to apply for this job opportunity. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the search is no longer active.
ITAR Requirement
To conform to U.S. Government aerospace technology export regulations (ITAR and EAR), applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State. Learn more about ITAR here.
