What is a CNC plasma programmer?

A CNC Plasma Programmer creates and optimizes cutting programs for CNC plasma machines, which use high-temperature plasma to cut metal. They interpret blueprints, select appropriate cutting parameters, and utilize CAD/CAM software to generate toolpaths. Their responsibilities include ensuring precision, minimizing material waste, and troubleshooting any programming or machine issues. This role requires knowledge of metal fabrication, CNC programming, and machine operations to efficiently produce accurate parts.

What does a CNC plasma programmer do?

As a CNC Plasma Programmer, your daily responsibilities include interpreting engineering drawings, creating and optimizing CNC programs for plasma cutting equipment, and collaborating with engineers and operators to ensure design specifications are met. You’ll frequently use CAD/CAM software to design cutting paths and may be responsible for troubleshooting issues with both software and machinery. Attention to detail is essential, as you’ll check your programs for accuracy and make adjustments based on material requirements or production feedback. You'll also interact regularly with shop floor staff to address production challenges and maintain workflow efficiency.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a CNC plasma programmer?

Success as a CNC Plasma Programmer requires a strong background in CNC programming, CAD/CAM software proficiency, and a keen understanding of metal fabrication processes, often supported by a technical degree or equivalent experience. Job description

About the Role

We are hiring skilled CNC Machine Operators across multiple specialties, including Press Brake Operators, Plate Roll Operators, and CNC Plasma Burner Operators. Whether you bring 3 to 5 years of solid hands-on experience or 15+ years as a master fabricator in one or more of these areas, we have a place for your expertise.

While we are hiring dedicated specialists for each machine type, candidates with cross-functional experience across multiple operations are highly desired.

Key Responsibilities (Role-Specific & Shop Floor)

  • Machine Operation (Specialized): Set up and safely operate equipment within your primary trade discipline:
    • Press Brake: Operate CNC Press Brakes (AccurPress, Cincinnati) to form precision components.
    • Plate Roll: Operate CNC Plate Rolling Equipment (Davi, Faccin) to roll cylinders, half cylinders, cones, and weld pads, using sweeps to check pre-bend and roll radius.
    • Plasma Burner: Set up, program/nest, and operate CNC Plasma Burning equipment to cut carbon and stainless steel plate.
  • Layout & Tack Welding: Perform job layout and tack-weld components using FCAW (Flux-Cored) and GMAW (Hardwire/MIG) as required for fit-up.
  • Quality Inspection: Inspect finished parts against engineering drawings by measuring length, height, width, angles, and Outer Diameter (OD via strap). Accurately log measurements on work orders for QC sign-off.
  • Material Handling: Safely load, unload, and maneuver heavy plate materials using overhead cranes and industrial forklifts.
  • Maintenance & Safety: Complete routine equipment maintenance (daily, weekly, monthly), maintain a clean workspace, and actively participate in our shop safety culture.

What We Are Looking For

  • Core Machine Expertise: 3 to 20+ years of dedicated experience operating CNC Press Brakes, CNC Plate Rolls, OR CNC Plasma Burners in a custom fabrication or heavy manufacturing environment. (Cross-experience on multiple machines is a major plus).
  • Blueprint & Inspection Skills: Strong ability to read engineering drawings, hold tight tolerances, and use standard measuring tools (sweeps, OD straps, calipers, protractors).
  • Tack Welding & Rigging: Practical skill with basic MIG/Flux-Cored tack welding and safe overhead crane/forklift operation.
  • Quality Focus: A track record of accurate measurement logging, material verification, and catching questionable material before processing.
