Job Title: CNC Operator

Job Description

The CNC Operator sets up, operates, and maintains CNC machinery to produce high-quality metal components that meet precise project specifications and industry standards. This role focuses on custom work for a variety of applications, often including trailers and cabs, in a dynamic fabrication environment.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret blueprints, CAD drawings, and work instructions to determine machining requirements and production sequences.
  • Set up CNC equipment, including plasma tables, lasers, press brakes, lathes, and mills, ensuring correct tooling, fixtures, and machine parameters.
  • Load and unload raw materials and workpieces, ensuring proper alignment, secure positioning, and safe handling at all times.
  • Operate CNC machinery to cut, form, and machine metal components according to specifications, maintaining consistent quality and accuracy.
  • Monitor machine operations continuously and make necessary adjustments to feeds, speeds, and offsets to maintain dimensional tolerances.
  • Perform routine inspections of parts using measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify compliance with drawings.
  • Document measurements and production results as required, and communicate any deviations or quality concerns promptly.
  • Conduct basic machine maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, tool changes, and minor adjustments to keep equipment in optimal condition.
  • Troubleshoot minor equipment issues and escalate major malfunctions or recurring problems to supervisors or maintenance personnel.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, following company safety policies and best practices for shop environments.
  • Collaborate closely with welders, fabricators, and engineers to clarify requirements, resolve issues, and ensure project goals are met.
  • Support custom project work by adapting to non-repetitive tasks, unique setups, and one-off or small-batch production runs.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 2+ years of CNC operation experience, including plasma table, laser, or press brake.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Ability to interpret CAD drawings and follow detailed work instructions.
  • Hands-on experience with CNC laser operation and programming.
  • Experience operating CNC plasma tables in a metal fabrication environment.
  • Experience operating press brakes, including setup and adjustment for custom work.
  • Competence in using measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges for precise inspection.
  • Practical experience with lathes, mills, and general machining operations.
  • Metal fabrication and machine operation within a shop environment.
  • Ability to perform CNC machine setup, including tooling selection and fixture placement.
  • Comfort working on custom projects rather than repetitive production tasks.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively in a busy custom shop environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a custom fabrication shop, handling unique and varied projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing priorities and project requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with welders, fabricators, and engineers.
  • Comfort working in an environment where cats are present in office and lunch areas.
  • Willingness to work both day and afternoon shifts as required.

Why Work Here?

You will join a family-run operation that offers a welcoming, shop-like culture and a strong sense of teamwork. The organization supports employees with company events that build camaraderie and a positive workplace atmosphere. Comprehensive benefits, including dental care, life insurance, vision care, and RRSP matching, demonstrate a commitment to long-term employee well-being and financial security. You will work on diverse custom projects, providing variety, continuous learning, and opportunities to grow your skills in a modern fabrication environment.

Work Environment

This role is based in a custom shop environment located approximately 25 minutes south of Calgary. The facility has recently expanded, adding a new extension to house a plasma cutter and other new machinery, creating a modern and well-equipped workspace. The shop operates with a strong hands-on, fabrication-focused atmosphere, where collaboration between CNC operators, welders, fabricators, and engineers is part of daily work. The initial shift runs from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and after about one month the position transitions to an afternoon shift from 3:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., Monday through Thursday. A few cats roam the front office and lunch area, so the environment is best suited for individuals who are comfortable working around animals.
