Job Summary:
The CNC Mill Setup/Operator is responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of CNC milling machines. The role involves reading and interpreting blueprints, programming CNC machines, setting tooling, and inspecting machined parts to ensure they meet specifications. This individual plays a crucial role in ensuring production runs smoothly and efficiently while maintaining a high standard of quality.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Machine Setup:
  • Prepare CNC mills for production runs by loading tools, securing workpieces, and setting machine parameters.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and engineering documentation to understand the required specifications.
  • Install, align, and secure fixtures, tooling, and workpieces using precision measuring instruments.
  • Conduct initial machine setups and make necessary adjustments to ensure correct machine operation.

Operation and Monitoring:
  • Operate CNC milling machines to machine parts according to specifications.
  • Monitor machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjust machines as necessary.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of equipment issues and collaborate with maintenance staff for repairs.
  • Operate various other machines or manual tools as needed during production.

Quality Control:
  • Inspect finished parts using precision measuring tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, and gauges) to ensure accuracy and conformance to specifications.
  • Perform first-article inspections and in-process inspections during production.
  • Ensure that machined parts meet tolerances, surface finish, and dimensional requirements specified in the blueprints.

Program Adjustments:
  • Input or modify CNC programs for specific part production.
  • Adjust machine offsets and tool paths as required for optimal performance and precision.
  • Collaborate with engineers or programmers to optimize CNC programming and improve production efficiency.

Documentation and Reporting:
  • Maintain accurate records of production, machine settings, and adjustments made during the machining process.
  • Log completed work and any discrepancies or defects found during production.
  • Follow established safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized workspace.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • 3 years experience performing complex Milling setups for Aerospace/Medical industries
  • +/- .0001 (one tenth) tolerance experience required
  • Proficient in using precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, etc.).
  • Basic knowledge of CNC programming (G-code, M-code).
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and mechanical drawings.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Technical certifications or vocational training in CNC machining or manufacturing preferred.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience as a CNC Setup Operator.
  • Familiarity with G-code programming and interpreting technical drawings/blueprints.

Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, feel/reach with hands/arms, talk, and hear.
The employee frequently is required to sit and walk. The employee is occasionally required to bend and stop, push and pull, reach above shoulder level, kneel, squat, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job to include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
