What is a CNC machine engineer?

CNC Machine Engineers are professionals who design, program, operate, and maintain computer numerical control (CNC) machines used in manufacturing. They develop and optimize processes to produce precision parts and components from materials such as metal, plastic, or wood. Their responsibilities also include troubleshooting equipment, ensuring quality control, and collaborating with other engineers to improve efficiency. CNC Machine Engineers play a vital role in industries like automotive, aerospace, and electronics where high accuracy and repeatability are essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC machine engineer?

To thrive as a CNC Machine Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, CNC programming, and machining processes, often supported by a relevant degree or technical certification. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, G-code programming, and various CNC control systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure precise machining, efficient production, and seamless integration with manufacturing teams.

What are some common challenges CNC machine engineers face when optimizing production processes?

CNC Machine Engineers often encounter challenges such as minimizing machine downtime, ensuring precision in high-volume production, and adapting to rapidly changing design specifications. Balancing speed with accuracy while maintaining strict quality standards can be demanding, particularly when troubleshooting unexpected equipment issues or programming errors. Collaboration with production teams and continuous process improvement are key to overcoming these hurdles and ensuring efficient, reliable output.

What is the difference between Cnc Machine Engineer vs Cnc Programmer?

AspectCnc Machine EngineerCnc Programmer
Primary RoleDesigns, maintains, and troubleshoots CNC machines and systemsDevelops and writes CNC code to control machine operations
Required SkillsMechanical knowledge, troubleshooting, machine operationG-code programming, CAD/CAM software proficiency
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, machine shopsManufacturing, CNC programming departments
CertificationsTechnical certifications, CNC operation trainingG-code, CAD/CAM software certifications

While both roles are essential in CNC manufacturing, the Cnc Machine Engineer focuses on machine design, maintenance, and troubleshooting, whereas the Cnc Programmer specializes in creating the code that controls CNC machines. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right skills and responsibilities in the industry.

Is CNC machine engineer in high demand?

CNC machine engineers are in high demand due to the ongoing need for precision manufacturing and automation in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and electronics. Skilled professionals with knowledge of CAD/CAM software, machine operation, and maintenance are particularly sought after, often leading to good job stability and competitive salaries.

What does a CNC machine engineer do?

A CNC machine engineer designs, programs, and maintains computer numerical control (CNC) machines used in manufacturing. They create tool paths using CAD/CAM software, set up machines, and ensure precision and quality in production processes. Strong technical skills and knowledge of machining operations are essential for this role.

Job description

HiFyve is hiring a Manufacturing Engineer in the Heavy Manufacturing industry in Riverside, MO!

Salary: $90K - $105K/year

Shift: 1st Shift

Location: Riverside, MO

Job Summary:

HiFyve is seeking a hands-on Manufacturing Engineer with strong CNC machining experience to support a heavy manufacturing operation producing large, complex components.

This is not a desk-only engineering role. You'll work directly with machinists, production, and quality to own and improve machining processes involving horizontal boring mills, large lathes, CNC programming, tooling, workholding, and components weighing 40,000+ pounds.

If you understand how parts are actually made and enjoy finding better ways to machine them, this is an opportunity to make a visible impact.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, modify, and review CNC programs and G-code for heavy machining operations
  • Develop and optimize machining processes for large, complex components
  • Support horizontal boring mills, large lathes, tooling, workholding, and part setup
  • Apply GD&T and complex engineering drawings to manufacturing processes
  • Develop PFMEAs, control plans, work instructions, and standard work
  • Identify tooling, equipment, automation, probing, and metrology improvements
  • Lead root cause and corrective actions to reduce scrap, rework, and repair
  • Support process and engineering change control
  • Partner with production, quality, suppliers, and customers to resolve technical issues

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field
  • 5+ years of relevant manufacturing experience preferred
  • Strong hands-on CNC machining and manufacturing engineering background
  • Experience programming CNC equipment using G-code
  • Strong understanding of GD&T and complex engineering drawings
  • Knowledge of machining processes, part setup, cutting tools, and materials
  • Experience with heavy, large-part, low-volume, or high-mix machining is highly desirable
  • CAD/CAM experience preferred; Autodesk Inventor experience is a plus
  • Strong problem-solving and continuous improvement mindset
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with machinists and cross-functional teams

If you're a machining-focused engineer who enjoys solving difficult manufacturing problems and improving how complex parts are made, apply today.
