Job description

Job Description
Work Arrangement:
Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Milford or Warren, MI three times per week.
The Role:
The Engineering Manager, MarTech & Headless Commerce Integration (CMS / AEM / Shopify) owns the end-to-end strategy, implementation, and operations of the content and integration layer that connects Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) and Adobe Target with our headless e-commerce platform (Shopify Plus) for OnStar digital commerce.
This leader drives how rich, segmented content authored in AEM and targeted via Adobe Target flows reliably into our OnStar.com and advisor-facing Shopify-based storefronts and other OnStar digital experiences, supporting multi-region, and multi-channel journeys.
You will lead a specialized web development and integration team focused on OnStar, acting as the architectural guide for headless web experiences, data pipelines, and APIs (GraphQL, REST, webhooks) while serving as a primary strategic partner to central GM platform teams that own the Adobe and commerce platforms. Your work will ensure that OnStar content creators can move quickly while the underlying systems remain secure, scalable, and highly available.
What You'll Do
Platform Ownership & Strategy
  • Own the AEM/CMS vision, roadmap, and technical direction.

  • Define and drive content architecture, templates, components, and governance to support reusable, scalable experiences.

  • Partner with product and marketing to prioritize CMS capabilities that unlock cross-segmentation, personalization, and experimentation.
  • Ensure the platform meets performance, security, accessibility, and compliance requirements.

Cross-Segmentation & Content Architecture
  • Design and govern content models that support audience- or segment-based experiences (e.g., brand, market, customer segment, product line).

  • Enable content re-use and inheritance across regions, brands, and channels while allowing localized flexibility.

  • Partner with analytics and experimentation teams to ensure content structures support A/B testing, targeting, and insights (e.g., Adobe Target, Analytics, or equivalent).

  • Define standards for taxonomies, tagging, and metadata to power search, recommendations, and reporting.

Web & Experience Delivery
  • Collaborate with web application teams (e.g., React/Next.js, Shopify, micro-frontends) to integrate AEM-delivered content into customer-facing experiences.

  • Ensure robust APIs, caching, and integration patterns between AEM and downstream web properties and services.

  • Partner with UX/design to define component libraries and authoring experiences that enable rapid iteration without sacrificing quality or performance.

  • Drive practices that maintain page performance (Core Web Vitals), availability, and scalability for content-driven experiences.

Operations, Reliability & Vendor Management
  • Establish and oversee operational runbooks, SLOs/SLAs, monitoring, and incident response for AEM/CMS.

  • Partner with infrastructure/SRE teams and vendors (e.g., Adobe) to manage environments, releases, and upgrades.

  • Own relationships with implementation partners and agencies, defining clear scopes, deliverables, and quality expectations.

  • Drive continuous improvement through post-incident reviews, capacity planning, and cost optimization.

People Leadership
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of CMS/AEM engineers, authors, and/or administrators, including hiring, onboarding, coaching, and performance management.

  • Set clear goals, provide regular feedback, and support career development and planning for team members (including senior ICs and future leaders).

  • Establish healthy team rituals and ways of working (1:1s, standups, retros, planning) that promote transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Foster inclusive, cross-functional collaboration with product, design, marketing, and engineering partners, resolving conflicts and aligning on priorities when trade-offs are required.

  • Champion modern engineering and product practices (e.g., agile delivery, experimentation, data-driven decision making) and model the behaviors you expect from the team.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • 3+ years of experience in digital experience, CMS platforms, or web engineering, including 2+ years owning or leading AEM or similar enterprise CMS.
  • 10 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience designing and operating AEM Sites (or equivalent), including templates, components, workflows, permissions, and publishing models.

  • Hands-on background working with web technologies (e.g., HTML/CSS/JS, React, APIs, CDNs, caching, performance optimization).
Experience with content modeling, taxonomies, and segmentation to support multi-brand or multi-region digital experiences.

  • Proven ability to lead teams and/or vendors, manage complex roadmaps, and deliver against clear KPIs.

  • Demonstrated people management experience (e.g., 2+ years managing engineers or cross-functional digital teams, including hiring, performance management, and coaching).

  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to translate between business goals and technical solutions.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Experience with Adobe Experience Cloud ecosystem (e.g., AEM as a Cloud Service, Adobe Target, Adobe Analytics, Launch/Tags).
  • Backend development experience (Java, Spring Boot, Microservices)

  • Background in eCommerce, subscriptions, or digital customer journeys across multiple brands or markets.

  • Experience with headless e-commerce platforms such as Shopify Plus (Online Store, Checkout, Hydrogen, metafields), with a focus on system integration and data synchronization between Shopify and AEM/other CMS platforms.

  • Experience integrating AEM with headless/front-end frameworks (e.g., React, Next.js, Hydrogen, SPA frameworks) and microservices.

  • Familiarity with modern DevOps/SRE practices (CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, observability, reliability engineering).

  • Experience leading cross-functional initiatives involving marketing, product, and engineering at enterprise scale.
