Job Description
This position serves as the University's primary internal communications Subject Matter Expert (SME), leads internal communications planning and implementation, serves as editor of Stetson Today, the university's online news site, and is responsible for other communication channels, such as daily announcements to the DeLand campus community.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities: Employment duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Direct internal communications strategies and initiatives to further the university's strategic initiatives and programs and advance university interests using available communication channels
  • Provide oversight and day-to-day direct management of Stetson Today, editing and posting content, and preparing the weekly "Your Top Stories from Stetson Today" digital newsletter
  • Attend campus events and interview students, faculty, staff, etc., for articles for Stetson Today
  • Assign stories for Stetson Today to freelance writers and contractors, submit their invoices to purchasing, and track expenses, working in collaboration with the Assistant Vice President of Marketing Communications
  • Take lead role in writing and editing internal communications in the form of emails, announcements, digital signs, memos, web updates and other documents
  • Assist the Stetson Office of Public Safety in DeLand with communications, including emails and Hatter Alert emergency notifications to the campus community, as needed
  • In times of crisis, assist the Assistant Vice President of Marketing Communications with communications to internal/external university communities
  • Work with the Editor of Stetson University Magazine to repurpose stories or write stories as assigned
  • Write and direct content for college search sites (US News, Princeton Review, Appily, etc.) and monitor weekly for updates, content, and viewership
  • Supervise part-time student workers who write stories for Stetson Today, take photographs, or perform other duties, as assigned
  • Perform other site and position specific functions as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The knowledge, skills, and abilities for this role include:
  • Proven editing and writing skills
  • Understanding of higher education and current issues and best practices
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to build relationships in academic and administrative environments
  • High level of independence, energy and integrity; demonstrated respect for a diversity of opinions and styles, and accepts accountability and responsibility
  • Ability to effectively advise, partner, and collaborate with university administration team
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize
  • Expertise in Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Required Qualifications: This position requires:
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or related field
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in journalism or communications

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, as well as a proven track record of writing error-free copy on deadline
  • Basic knowledge of Associated Press style
  • Experience working with CMS, SEO and a digital environment, such as WordPress
  • Additional software skills (e.g., Photoshop, WordPress, HTML) a plus, background and experience in CMS, SEO and the digital environment

Work Environment: Requires some physical effort (i.e., manual dexterity in the use of fingers or limbs in the operation of office equipment; extended periods of time at the keyboard); and occasional hours outside the normal University schedule.
Work authorization sponsorship may be available for this position. However, sponsorship is contingent upon the non-applicability of the visa petition fees outlined in the relevant Executive Order signed September 19, 2025. Due to the recent federally-mandated increased financial expense, the university is not in a position to absorb this significantly increased cost of sponsorship for new H-1B petitions at this time.
