What is a CMA Per Diem?

A CMA Per Diem is a Certified Medical Assistant who works on a flexible, as-needed basis instead of a regular, full-time schedule. Per diem positions allow CMAs to choose their shifts, providing coverage during staff shortages, vacations, or busy periods in healthcare settings such as clinics, hospitals, or doctor's offices. This arrangement offers both flexibility for the employee and staffing solutions for employers, but may not include benefits like health insurance or paid time off. Per diem CMAs are expected to perform the same clinical and administrative duties as their full-time counterparts, including taking patient histories, assisting with exams, and managing records.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CMA Per Diem?

To thrive as a CMA Per Diem, you need a current Certified Medical Assistant credential, a solid grasp of clinical procedures, and experience in patient care. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems, basic lab equipment, and relevant certifications such as CPR are typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and the ability to work independently make someone stand out in this flexible, on-call position. These skills ensure high-quality patient care and allow you to integrate seamlessly into different healthcare teams with minimal onboarding.

What are the typical scheduling expectations and flexibility for a CMA Per Diem position?

As a CMA Per Diem, you can expect a highly flexible work schedule, as these roles are designed to fill staffing gaps on an as-needed basis. You may be offered shifts with short notice and can often choose which assignments fit your availability, making it ideal for those seeking work-life balance or supplementary income. However, this flexibility also means hours are not guaranteed and may vary week to week. It's important to communicate your availability clearly with your employer and be prepared for variability in workload.
