How much do cloud security engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 13, 2026, the average yearly pay for cloud security engineer in the United States is $152,773.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $143,000.00 and $158,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the salary of a cloud security engineer?

The average salary of a cloud security engineer typically ranges from $90,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Professionals with skills in cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud and security tools often earn higher salaries.

What are some common challenges cloud security engineers face when securing multi-cloud environments?

Cloud Security Engineers often encounter challenges related to managing consistent security policies across multiple cloud providers, each with its own tools and configurations. Ensuring data visibility, controlling access, and monitoring threats in a multi-cloud setup requires advanced knowledge of automation and security orchestration. Collaboration with development and operations teams is essential to address misconfigurations and integrate security best practices early in the deployment lifecycle. Staying updated with evolving cloud-native security solutions is also crucial to effectively mitigate emerging threats.

What is the difference between Cloud Security Engineer vs Cloud Security Analyst?

AspectCloud Security EngineerCloud Security Analyst
Primary RoleDesigns, implements, and manages security solutions for cloud environmentsMonitors, analyzes, and responds to security threats in cloud systems
Skills & CertificationsCloud security certifications (e.g., CCSP, AWS Security Specialty), scripting, cloud architectureSecurity certifications (e.g., CompTIA Security+, CISSP), threat analysis, monitoring tools
Work EnvironmentHands-on technical work, cloud platforms, security architectureSecurity monitoring, incident response, analysis tools
Employer & Industry UsageCloud service providers, enterprise IT teams, cybersecurity firmsSecurity operations centers, IT departments, consulting firms

While both roles focus on cloud security, the Cloud Security Engineer primarily develops and implements security solutions, whereas the Cloud Security Analyst monitors and responds to security incidents. Both roles require cloud security certifications and are vital in protecting cloud environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cloud security engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cloud Security Engineer, you need a strong understanding of cloud platforms (like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), networking, and cybersecurity principles, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as SIEM systems, encryption technologies, and certifications like AWS Certified Security or CISSP is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you anticipate threats and work collaboratively with development and operations teams. These abilities are crucial to ensure the security, compliance, and resilience of cloud-based infrastructure in dynamic IT environments.

What is a cloud security engineer?

Cloud Security Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, and maintain secure cloud-based systems and services. They are responsible for protecting cloud infrastructure, applications, and data from cyber threats by developing security policies, monitoring for vulnerabilities, and responding to incidents. Their work ensures that organizations can safely leverage cloud technologies while complying with security standards and regulations. Cloud Security Engineers often collaborate with other IT teams to integrate security best practices into cloud deployments.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Cloud Security Engineer to design, implement, and manage multi-cloud

network security controls across Azure and GCP. The role focuses on Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) delivery

through Terraform, integrated into Azure DevOps Pipelines, GitHub Actions, and Argo CD GitOps workflows.

The ideal candidate is a subject matter expert (SME) who can build secure, automated solutions from

scratch using Terraform, while documenting and transferring knowledge to internal teams. The role

requires someone comfortable balancing planned project execution under agile methodologies with rapid

incident triage (P0–P3) in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Roles & Responsibilities

Design, implement, and manage cloud-native network security controls in Azure and GCP, including:

• Azure NSGs (Network Security Groups)

• GCP VPC Service Controls (VPC-SC)

• GCP Cloud Armor (DDoS/WAF protection)

• GCP Cloud Next-Gen Firewall (NGFW Enterprise) with IPS/IDS

• Develop, maintain, and scale Terraform-based Infrastructure-as-Code modules for cloud infrastructure

and security policies.

• Build, enhance, and manage CI/CD automation using Azure DevOps Pipelines and GitHub Actions.

• Support Kubernetes deployments and GitOps workflows using Argo CD, ensuring secure and reliable rollout of application manifests. • Author clear documentation, runbooks, and deliver knowledge transfers/training to operational and engineering teams. • Collaborate cross-functionally with cloud, security, and development teams to ensure secure, scalable solutions. • Participate in agile ceremonies for planned project work and provide rapid incident response during P0–P3 security/networking events. Required Qualifications 5+ years of hands-on experience as a Cloud Engineer / Cloud Security Engineer / DevOps Engineer. • Strong expertise in Terraform (designing reusable modules, managing state, enterprise workflows). • 5+ years of practical experience with Azure and GCP network security services: NSGs, VPC-SC, Cloud Armor, NGFW with IPS/IDS. • Proficiency in CI/CD tools: Azure DevOps Pipelines and GitHub Actions. • Familiarity with GitOps tools (Argo CD or Flux) for Kubernetes. • Scripting proficiency (PowerShell, Bash, or Python) for automation and troubleshooting. • Demonstrated experience documenting technical solutions, producing clear runbooks, and performing knowledge transfers to enable operational adoption. • Strong troubleshooting and incident response skills in cloud environments. Experience securing workloads in AKS (Azure Kubernetes Service) and GKE (Google Kubernetes Engine). • Exposure to other CI/CD platforms (GitLab CI, Jenkins, CircleCI) and config management (Ansible). • Relevant certifications (strongly desired): • Cloud Security / Architecture: Microsoft Azure Security Engineer Associate, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Google Professional Cloud Security Engineer, or Google Professional Cloud Architect • IaC / DevOps: HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate, Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD), or Azure DevOps Engineer Expert
