What is a cloud engineer?

As a cloud engineer, you manage and monitor cloud computing systems. Your job duties include creating, testing, and implementing cloud technologies based on the demands of your business. Many cloud engineers are involved in other aspects of information technology, such as overseeing SAP projects. Strong communication skills are required to communicate with clients to understand their needs so that you can create effective solutions for them. You work closely with the entire development team to create a work plan and timeline for deliverables on a project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cloud engineer?

To thrive as a Cloud Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, networking, and cloud computing platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect. Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you work effectively across technical and business teams. These skills ensure efficient cloud infrastructure deployment, robust security, and seamless operations critical for modern organizations.

What are some common challenges cloud engineers face when migrating legacy systems to the cloud?

Cloud Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring data integrity during migration, minimizing downtime, and addressing compatibility issues between legacy applications and cloud platforms. Additionally, they must plan for security and compliance requirements while optimizing costs and performance. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including security, application owners, and business stakeholders, is crucial to successfully navigate these complexities and deliver a seamless transition.

What is the difference between Cloud Engineer vs Cloud Administrator?

AspectCloud EngineerCloud Administrator
CertificationsAWS, Azure, Google Cloud certifications, DevOps toolsSimilar cloud platform certifications, focus on administration
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, and deploying cloud solutionsManaging and maintaining cloud infrastructure
ResponsibilitiesBuilding cloud architecture, automation, scriptingMonitoring, configuring, troubleshooting cloud systems
Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare for cloud deploymentPrimarily in organizations with existing cloud infrastructure

While both roles work with cloud platforms, Cloud Engineers focus on designing and building cloud solutions, whereas Cloud Administrators manage and maintain existing cloud environments. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job role.

Do cloud engineers get paid well?

Cloud engineers typically earn competitive salaries due to the high demand for skills in cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Salaries vary based on experience, certifications, and location, but generally, cloud engineering is considered a well-paying IT role. Professionals with expertise in scripting, automation, and security tend to have higher earning potential.

Is cloud engineering still in demand?

Cloud engineering remains in high demand as organizations continue to migrate to cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Professionals with skills in cloud architecture, security, and automation are sought after, and certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect can enhance job prospects.

What does a cloud engineer actually do?

A cloud engineer designs, implements, and manages cloud infrastructure and services, such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. They handle tasks like deploying applications, ensuring security, optimizing performance, and maintaining cloud environments, often using scripting and automation tools. Strong knowledge of networking, security, and cloud platforms is essential for this role.

Overview

Apogee has an exciting new opportunity for a Cloud Engineer in support of Special Operations Forces Acquisition, Technology and Logistics (SOF AT&L) Program Executive Office for Software Development & Acquisition (PEO-SDA).

PEO-SDA delivers operational software and digital platforms across multiple networks to automate complex SOF workflows and rapidly close capability gaps. By partnering with USSOCOM S&T and leveraging external investments and best practices, SDA matures and transitions emerging technologies into fielded capabilities while increasing SOF buying power. The organization operates in real-world exercises and experiments to ensure solutions work in complex operational environments, and it advances secure modern delivery through accredited DevSecOps infrastructure, rapid prototyping approaches, and scalable digital ecosystem, intelligence, and mission command applications.

This is a full-time position located at MacDill AFB, FL

Responsibilities
Provides expert-level engineering leadership in support of SOF enterprise modernization efforts, with responsibility for complex multi-discipline engineering activities supporting Cloud, DevSecOps, and enterprise software integration.

  • Applies extensive knowledge of RMF within Cloud architectures to ensure enterprise solutions adhere to security and accreditation requirements.
  • Serves as a senior technical advisor on Kubernetes orchestration, deployment patterns, and Cloud-native architectures; provides expert-level analysis of strengths and weaknesses of major Cloud Platforms and their applicability to SOF Cloud Operations.
  • Provides expert guidance on Cloud platform selection and design based on mission requirements, operational environment, performance considerations, and security constraints.
  • Engages in advanced Agile SAFe-aligned software development activities; leads and participates in Agile ceremonies; utilizes SAFe management tools to guide backlog refinement, PI planning, and cross-team coordination.
  • Applies significant software and/or systems integration experience within SOF or IC environments to ensure alignment with mission needs and enterprise technical baselines.
  • Possesses a midlevel understanding of networking concepts and applies advanced tools to document and analyze complex technical tasks, including implementation of Center for Internet Security (CIS) benchmarks and controls within enterprise engineering solutions.
  • Conducts and supports DoD software testing methodologies, including evaluation of test plans, scripts, results, and required documentation for enterprise-grade systems-preferably within SOF or IC mission contexts.
  • Employs and evaluates state-of-the-art information technology, environmental engineering technologies, and Cloud-native frameworks, integrating them into system planning, design, operation, and modernization strategies.
  • Supports development, planning, and management of enterprise-level system engineering efforts, coordinating with organizational managers, engineering authorities, budget personnel, and mission stakeholders.
  • Provides advanced inputs and recommendations for status briefings, engineering reports, and leadership updates on assigned programs and technical efforts.
  • Conducts market research, technology scouting, and evaluations of emerging technologies relevant to SOF missions.
  • Performs surveillance of design, development, integration, and production activities on behalf of government counterparts, ensuring compliance with approved engineering processes.
  • Identifies engineering deficiencies, evaluates impacts, and recommends corrective actions based on detailed examination and trend analysis of engineering performance data.
  • Coordinates and participates in technical reviews, readiness assessments, and engineering decision forums across multi-disciplinary teams.
