What is a cloud developer?

A Cloud Developer is a software engineer who specializes in designing, building, and maintaining applications that run on cloud computing platforms like AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud. They leverage cloud services to create scalable, resilient, and cost-effective solutions, often using modern programming languages and frameworks. Cloud Developers are responsible for deploying code, managing cloud resources, ensuring security, and optimizing performance within cloud environments. Their work enables businesses to take advantage of the flexibility and scalability offered by the cloud.

What is a cloud developer?

A cloud developer implements engineering principles to develop cloud storage solutions for customers. As a cloud developer, you consult with your clients about their goals and needs and create storage, sharing, and computing services that meet those requirements. You may use a variety of programming languages, data storage techniques, and developer tools to build the appropriate storage architecture. Your duties also involve documenting the design process and providing technical support to users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cloud developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cloud Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or Node.js), a solid understanding of cloud architecture, and experience with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud; a relevant degree is often preferred. Proficiency with containerization tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD pipelines, and certifications such as AWS Certified Developer or Google Professional Cloud Developer are typically valued. Excellent problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for building scalable, secure, and efficient cloud-based solutions that meet business needs.

What are some common challenges faced by cloud developers when migrating legacy applications to the cloud?

Cloud Developers often encounter challenges such as refactoring monolithic architectures, addressing compatibility issues, and ensuring data integrity during migration. Adapting existing applications to leverage cloud-native services may require significant code changes and coordination with other teams, such as security and operations. Effective communication, thorough planning, and a clear understanding of both the legacy and target cloud environments are essential to minimize downtime and ensure a smooth transition.

What is the difference between Cloud Developer vs Cloud Engineer?

AspectCloud DeveloperCloud Engineer

Is a cloud developer a good career?

A cloud developer is a viable career choice as it involves designing and implementing cloud-based applications using platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. The role typically requires skills in programming, cloud architecture, and certifications, and offers strong job growth and competitive salaries in the technology industry.

Is cloud developer an entry level job?

A cloud developer role can be entry level if it requires basic knowledge of cloud platforms like AWS or Azure and programming skills in languages such as Python or Java. However, many positions prefer candidates with some experience or certifications, making some roles more suitable for those with intermediate skills.

This role ensures the resilience and optimal performance of enterprise container management platforms across multi-cloud and hybrid infrastructures. It primarily focuses on resolving complex technical challenges within Kubernetes-as-a-Service environments to maintain high availability and operational stability for customers. This role independently makes critical technical decisions to diagnose and resolve complex, high-impact incidents within production container environments. Decisions directly influence system uptime and customer satisfaction, often requiring rapid problem-solving under pressure. The incumbent regularly engages with enterprise customers to provide technical guidance and incident updates. Collaboration extends internally to product engineering teams, SRE specialists, and fellow support engineers to resolve deep-seated platform issues. This role directly impacts the operational continuity and reliability of mission-critical enterprise container platforms, with failures potentially incurring significant business costs and reputational damage. The scope encompasses complex multi cloud and hybrid infrastructure environments, ensuring systemic availability across a fleet of applications. A highly analytical and methodical working style is essential for deep technical problem-solving and root cause analysis. The role requires exceptional adaptability and resilience to navigate high-pressure situations and complex, evolving cloud-native technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Delivers expert-level technical support and resolution for complex issues impacting enterprise container management platforms.

  • Manages incident response and root cause analysis for critical production outages in Kubernetes and related cloud-native environments.

  • Owns the end-to-end resolution process for escalated technical problems, ensuring timely communication and effective solutions for customers.

  • Drives proactive identification of systemic issues and contributes to the continuous improvement of platform reliability and support processes.

  • Designs and implements automation scripts and tools to enhance platform observability, resilience, and operational efficiency.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Vocational: apprenticeship/certification completion. May be technical or non-technical. May include on- the-job training in addition to studies. In some locations, completion may be recognized by diploma. Advanced programs may be 2+ years. Associate degree: first attainable degree at the post-high school level. Typically 2 year completion beyond High School level (i.e., Associate of Arts, GCE 'A' level (Singapore), etc.) or equivalent experience. BA/BS or equivalent experience preferred.

  • 1-2 years experience in relevant technologies and customer environments.

  • Relevant industry qualification where applicable.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Deep expertise in Kubernetes, including its architecture, operations, and troubleshooting within multi-cloud environments (EKS, AKS, GKE).

  • Proficiency with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform and Ansible for automation and configuration management.

  • Strong analytical and diagnostic skills for complex system issues, coupled with experience in API-driven automation.

  • Solid understanding of cloud-native principles, distributed systems, and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices.

This position is subject to a background check(s), including criminal, credit, and/or employment references. The candidate is required to complete the background check(s) once an offer has been accepted. This will be conducted by SUSE's external provider, where legally permitted.
