Required SkillsNegotiation, persuasion, closing techniquesCustomer service, product knowledge, communication
Work EnvironmentOften in sales offices or showroomsRetail stores, showrooms, or online
Common CertificationsSales certifications, negotiation trainingCustomer service certifications, product training

While both Closer and Sales Associate roles involve sales, Closers focus on sealing deals and finalizing sales, often requiring strong negotiation skills. Sales Associates typically generate leads and support customers throughout the buying process. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right skills and expectations for each position.

What are some common challenges closers face when finalizing sales deals, and how can they overcome them?

Closers often encounter challenges such as handling last-minute objections, negotiating terms, and ensuring clear communication between stakeholders. To overcome these, it's important to actively listen to client concerns, maintain a deep understanding of the product or service, and collaborate closely with other sales team members and support staff. Building strong relationships with prospects and staying organized throughout the sales process can also help closers manage complex deals more effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a closer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Closer, you need strong sales acumen, negotiation skills, and a proven track record in closing deals, typically supported by experience in sales or business development roles. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce and sales automation tools is usually required. Excellent communication, resilience, and relationship-building abilities help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for consistently converting leads into customers and driving revenue growth for the organization.

What is a closer?

A closer is a salesperson that specializes in the final part of the sales process. As a closer, you typically do not make cold calls or sales pitches to the customer; you follow up after another salesperson has established a relationship with the customer. Your job is to find ways to get customers to purchase the product or service that your company offers. You must have strong negotiation skills, as you use a variety of sales tactics such as deadlines, pressure, and price negotiation to seal the deal. Your job duties include identifying the issues that are preventing the sale, using proven techniques to influence the customer decision, and negotiating a final agreement.

Why NFIB?
Named one of Glassdoor's Top 50 Best Place to Work, NFIB offers more than a job; we offer a mission. We also provide paid training, full benefits, and an uncapped commission & bonus plan that top-tier professionals crave. Responsibilities
The Profile of Success
Our team is composed of individuals who share a specific set of power traits.
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit: You've owned a business, run a department, or managed a territory as if it were your own. You take full accountability for your results.
  • Relational Grit: You have the professional persistence to conduct face-to-face cold calls and the ability to build instant rapport with small business owners wherever you find them.
  • Coach Mentality: You value continuous improvement. You are a fast learner who thrives on mastering a proven, structured sales model.
  • Mission-Driven: You aren't just selling a membership; you are growing the Voice of Small Business. As they are busy running their business, we are in Washington, D.C., the state capitals, and in the courts fighting to protect them.

What's In It For You?
  • Unlimited Income Potential: Average yearly compensation of $80k - $200k. Top 10% earn over 200k (Uncapped Straight Commission).
  • Stability & Benefits: W-2 position with full medical, dental, vision, and matching 401k (eligible after 30 days).
  • Training Pay Safety Net: Up to 13 weeks of performance-based training pay to get you up to speed (1,000/wk or commission whichever is greater).
  • Work/Life Balance: A self-directed schedule that respects your time where full-time effort in the field drives your success (M-F, 8-10hrs/day).
  • Mileage Reimbursement: Monthly support for your travel.

Your Mission (Responsibilities)
This is a Hunter/Closer role. You will be the boots-on-the-ground - growing the membership by engaging independent business owners of all sizes and industries.
  • Prospecting: Conduct in-person cold calls to meet small business owners (no appointment setting).
  • The NFIB Presentation: Master and deliver our success-proven, 5-minute verbatim sales presentation.
  • The Close: Use an assumptive one-call close to enroll new members and process payments on the spot.
  • Advocacy: Educate owners on how NFIB protects their rights in Washington, D.C., and your state capital.

Qualifications to Win
  • Professional Perseverance: You see "no" as a step toward "yes" and thrive under pressure.
  • Strategic Adaptability: You are quick-witted and able to overcome objections with ease.
  • Transferable Excellence: We value results over specific resumes. Whether your background is in Sales, Military Leadership, Education, Small Business Ownership, or just out of college - if you have the drive, we want to talk to you.
  • Technical Savvy: Intermediate skills to manage our digital sales tools.

Ready to make a difference in your community while securing your financial future? Be part of a team of truly extraordinary people. Apply today to grow the Voice of Small Business.
