Clinical R Programmer information

What is a Clinical R programmer?

Clinical R Programmers are professionals who use the R programming language to manage, analyze, and visualize clinical trial data in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare industries. They play a key role in preparing statistical reports, generating tables, listings, and figures (TLFs), and ensuring data integrity for regulatory submissions. Clinical R Programmers collaborate with statisticians, data managers, and clinical teams to ensure the accuracy and compliance of clinical trial results with industry standards and regulatory requirements.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a Clinical R programmer?

To thrive as a Clinical R Programmer, you need a solid background in statistics, R programming, and clinical trial data analysis, often supported by a degree in statistics, biostatistics, or a related field. Expertise in SAS, CDISC standards (SDTM/ADaM), and familiarity with clinical data management systems are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication enable you to interpret data accurately and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills are vital for ensuring reliable statistical outputs that support regulatory submissions and data-driven decisions in clinical research.

What are common challenges faced by Clinical R programmers when working with clinical trial data?

Clinical R Programmers often encounter challenges such as handling large and complex datasets, ensuring strict compliance with regulatory standards (like CDISC SDTM and ADaM), and maintaining data integrity throughout the analysis process. Collaboration can be demanding, as programmers must frequently coordinate with biostatisticians, data managers, and clinical teams to interpret data requirements and resolve discrepancies. Staying updated with evolving industry guidelines and managing tight project timelines are also common aspects of the role.

What is the difference between Clinical R Programmer vs Clinical SAS Programmer?

AspectClinical R ProgrammerClinical SAS Programmer
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in statistics, biostatistics, or related field; proficiency in R programmingUsually requires a degree in statistics, biostatistics, or related field; proficiency in SAS programming
Work EnvironmentOften works in research-focused settings, academia, or biotech companies using open-source toolsCommonly employed in pharmaceutical companies, CROs, and clinical trial data analysis using SAS
Industry UsageGrowing in popularity for data analysis and visualization in clinical researchStandard in clinical trial data management and regulatory submissions

While both roles involve programming for clinical data analysis, Clinical R Programmers focus on using R for statistical analysis and visualization, whereas Clinical SAS Programmers primarily use SAS for data management and reporting. The choice depends on the company's preferred tools and project requirements.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a R Developer with Bio Background based in Netherlands.

Join a mission-driven engineering team where your expertise in R, data science, and life sciences will contribute to impactful solutions across drug discovery and clinical research. In this role, you will design and develop data-driven applications that help scientists and researchers make better decisions using complex biological and clinical data. You will combine software engineering skills with domain knowledge in bioinformatics, clinical workflows, and regulated environments. Working alongside experienced engineers, data scientists, and life science specialists, you will build scalable solutions with real-world scientific impact. This fully remote opportunity offers strong ownership, technical challenges, and the chance to grow within a collaborative, innovation-focused environment.

Accountabilities
  • Develop and maintain R-based solutions for statistical programming, data analysis, visualization, and scientific workflows supporting life science and healthcare projects.
  • Build interactive applications and data tools using R/Shiny to help researchers and clinical teams explore, interpret, and act on complex datasets.
  • Design, implement, and maintain reproducible data processing pipelines while following software engineering and quality standards.
  • Work with clinical, scientific, and technical stakeholders to gather requirements, manage priorities, and translate business needs into effective technical solutions.
  • Apply knowledge of clinical trial processes, bioinformatics workflows, and regulated environments to deliver reliable and compliant data solutions.
  • Support the development and maintenance of reusable R packages, tools, and frameworks that improve scalability and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to solve complex data challenges across areas such as drug development, clinical research, and biological analysis.
Requirements
  • Strong proficiency in R programming for statistical analysis, data manipulation, visualization, and application development.
  • Experience working with life sciences, bioinformatics, biostatistics, or related scientific domains.
  • Knowledge of CDISC standards including SDTM, ADaM, and SEND, along with familiarity with industry best practices.
  • Experience with TLF programming (Tables, Listings, and Figures) and understanding of clinical data reporting processes.
  • Knowledge of validation principles and working practices within GxP-regulated environments.
  • Experience with Medical Data Review, Pharmacovigilance, and clinical trial workflows.
  • Familiarity with Git or other version control systems and modern software development practices.
  • Experience gathering requirements, managing backlogs, and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Master's degree in bioinformatics, computer science, data science, biostatistics, mathematics, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Additional experience with R/Shiny applications, Nextflow pipelines, bioinformatics tools and databases, molecular biology concepts, Bioconductor, BLAST, NCBI, EMBL, PDB, PubMed, or R package development is considered an advantage.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote international environment and communicate clearly in English.

  • Meaningful projects supporting drug discovery, clinical trials, and scientific decision-making.
  • High level of technical ownership with opportunities to design and evolve impactful data applications.
  • Collaboration with experienced engineers, data scientists, bioinformaticians, and life science professionals.
  • Competitive B2B compensation aligned with experience and career level.
  • Professional development support through learning opportunities, conferences, workshops, and continuous growth initiatives.
  • Remote-first culture built on trust, autonomy, collaboration, and thoughtful problem-solving.
  • Opportunity to contribute to open-source projects and grow as an R and R/Shiny specialist.
