Description
PRIMARY PURPOSE
This position is a full-time academic position within the confines of the Austin-based Master of Science in Anesthesia (MSA) Program of Case Western Reserve University. The Director of Clinical Education is responsible for arranging, evaluating, and overseeing all clinical education experiences. The person in this position will take an active role in all clinical activities, including course mapping, curriculum development, development of clinical faculty, and teaching in the classroom. This person will ensure that activities comply with University, School, and Program policies and procedures.
The Director of Clinical Education is expected to devote two extended administrative days to the program each week and to hold regular office hours for students. Administrative days are expected to remain consistent. One administrative day may be adjusted occasionally, with prior approval from the Program Director, when necessary to support program goals.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following tasks are listed in order of anticipated time consumption and overall importance for the successful undertaking of this position. Under the overall supervision of the Program Director, and in close collaboration with the Associate Program Director and Directors of Didactic and Simulation Education, the Director of Clinical Education will:
  1. Provide classroom and clinical instruction and student evaluation in a variety of clinical settings as deemed necessary by the Program Director and/or Associate Program Director, organizing other resources to teach as needed, ensuring each course provides students with:
    1. A schedule of didactic and clinical instruction topics with dates, reading assignments, and evaluation mechanisms, distributed at the beginning of each semester.
    2. Course goals, objectives, and foci that are correlated between the didactic activities and the clinical application.
    3. A list of overall course learning objectives, distributed at the beginning of each semester. Review objectives and materials on a regular basis to keep information current and up-to-date.
    4. A list of learning objectives for each class session, distributed at the beginning of each semester.
    5. Quizzes and examinations that are designed and evaluated with an eye toward critically- and clinically-oriented thinking and board examinations.
    6. Effective standardized evaluation instruments to evaluate instructors' teaching effectiveness based on attainment of learning objectives and that feedback is shared with program direction.
    7. Collaborate with local anesthesiology departments to support basic science and clinical curriculum.
    8. In coordination with the Program Director and/or Associate Program Director serve as course instructor for Clinical Correlation course series and Case Presentations, which includes coordination of scheduling, course materials, exams and grades. Continue to reevaluate and enhance the program's four Anesthesia Clinical Correlation courses (ANES 462, 464, 468, 470), where students deliver weekly case presentations to their peers and the larger medical community.
  2. Provide substantive guidance for the overall clinical program design and curriculum development for the MSA Program in Austin, TX, ensuring all course goals, objectives and foci are developed according to University and accreditation standards and are correlated appropriately for clinical application. Create or provide a schedule of clinical rotations with dates, reading assignments, requirements, and evaluation mechanisms to be distributed at the beginning of each semester. Provide organization and guidance to Program Director and faculty in the development, delivery, and coordination of courses, as well as in other academic affairs. In close collaboration with the other Directors of Clinical Education across the network, undertake a systematic semester-end review of courses and student evaluations. Dispense administrative advice and guidance to carry out plans and procedures consistent with established policies.
  3. Provide mentoring and fellowship for each student. Provide guidance to students as it relates to academic advising and support services. Share responsibilities with the Associate Program Director (or Program Director) in serving as official academic advisor to MSA students.
  4. Maintain and coordinate information management systems and records to support the academic and administrative functions of the program as deemed appropriate by the Program Director (or Associate Program Director) including an up-to-date student roster with grades. Continuously monitor student clinical progress and meet regularly with the Program Director to report findings such as the clinical standards progress. It is the responsibility of the Director of Clinical Education to schedule these meetings.
  5. Interface with outside organizations and individuals, including potential students, on behalf of the MSA Program. Assist in interviewing and selecting candidates for future classes. Act as a liaison between the MSA Program office and professional communities, as well as other schools, committees, and task forces within the University. Assist the Program in the development of student marketing and recruiting strategies. Participate in recruitment visits to colleges and universities.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
  1. Participate in local, national, and international organizations for professional development. Become and maintain familiarity with current anesthesiology literature and trends in the practice of clinical anesthesia.
  2. Assist Program Director and other faculty members with special projects.
  3. Attend various program and department committee meetings.
  4. Instruct and participate in didactic sessions and exams.
  5. Assist in creating a budget for clinical training, including but not limited to faculty education, equipment procurement and maintenance, clinical site training.
  6. Instruct and participate in simulation lab sessions and exams.
  7. Perform other duties as required.

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications
Applicants must be a practicing, certified anesthesiologist assistant (CAA) and should be an experienced teacher with practical skills in physiology, biophysics, mathematics, pathology, physics and chemistry. A minimum of 3 years' teaching experience required. 7 years or more teaching experience desired.
Applicants should possess a graduate degree. A graduate degree in education (M.Ed. or Ph.D.) is desirable.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Must have excellent English written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to write lesson plans, teach didactic courses and laboratory procedures, and participate in the clinical education of the students.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues and supervisory staff at all levels.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with accounting and bookkeeping procedures.
  • Working knowledge of computer software applications and distance education.
  • Ability to analyze facts, exercise judgment, and arrive at valid conclusions.
  • Excellent management, clinical, education, organizational, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision.
  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.

Salary Range or Pay Grade
$73,000-$83,000
