REPORTS TO: Dean of Health Sciences and/or designee
CLASSIFICATION: 9-month Faculty
FLSA Status: Exempt
SUMMARY:
The Veterinarian/Medical Director in a higher education Veterinary Technology program provides clinical and medical leadership while preparing the next generation of credentialed veterinary technicians. This 9-month faculty appointment includes full-time administrative and teaching responsibilities during the summer months. The role combines an 8-10 credit teaching load per semester with clinical supervision, program leadership, and oversight of student learning in laboratory, on-campus, affiliated clinical sites, and community-based settings, including the program's developing mobile veterinary unit. Responsibilities are carried out across multiple campus locations, including Monaca and Washington, as well as at external partner sites.
The Medical Director leads the development and implementation of animal use SOPs and IACUC protocols, ensuring regulatory compliance and the highest standards of animal welfare and ethical practice. Working collaboratively with the Dean, Program Director, faculty, and clinical partners, this role supports accreditation, program growth, and fosters a culture of professionalism, safety, and compassionate care.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Compliance, Safety and Administrative Duties:
- Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory standards and guidelines.
- Maintain a safe and sanitary learning environment for students and animals involved in the program.
- Participate in program assessment, and the accreditation processes.
- Provides administrative coverage of the Health Sciences building in the absence of the Dean.
2. Collaboration:
- Collaborate with other faculty members to improve and enhance the overall quality of the veterinary technician program, ensuring a cohesive and integrated learning experience for students.
- Provide building/site coverage as needed and in discussion with the program director and dean.
- Foster positive relationships with local organizations and industry professionals.
3. Teaching and Instruction as needed (8-10 credits per semester required, including summer term):
- Teach 8-10 credit hours per semester as assigned/available per fall, spring, and summer semester in assigned veterinary technology courses, which may include lecture, laboratory, and hands-on clinical instruction across various locations. Classes are part of the base salary and do not constitute overload.
- Develop and deliver course content in various aspects of veterinary medicine in compliance with accreditation requirements while maintaining current industry standards.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and interactive learning environment that encourages student engagement, professionalism, and critical thinking.
- Assess student learning outcomes and provide timely, constructive feedback to support academic and clinical skill development.
4. Clinical Supervision:
- This position may involve opportunities to provide practical experiences for veterinary technician students on-site at Community College of Beaver County, at local veterinary clinics, or other clinical facilities.
- Supervise students during laboratory, live animal, and community-based clinical experiences to ensure skill competency, patient safety, and adherence to ethical and professional standards.
- Provide guidance, support, and constructive feedback to enhance students' clinical knowledge, technical proficiency, and professionalism.
- Participate in and help lead the development, implementation, and oversight of services delivered through the program's mobile veterinary unit.
- Collaborate with program leadership to establish service models, clinical protocols, safety standards, and student learning objectives for mobile unit operations, which may include preventive care services and, as program capacity allows, surgical and dental procedures.
- Ensure all mobile clinical activities comply with applicable laws, accreditation standards, animal welfare guidelines, and institutional policies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
- DVM or VMD degree from an accredited veterinary school.
- Current licensure as a veterinarian.
- Experience in veterinary clinical practice.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

- DEA registration is strongly preferred; candidates must obtain DEA licensure within six (6) months of hire if not currently held.
