General Summary:
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist, under the direction of the laboratory director and supervision of the technical supervisor, is responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures and reporting of test results. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist's responsibilities may include receiving specimens, verifying proper patient identification, and verifying specimen acceptability. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs all laboratory procedures in a prompt, accurate, and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist may participate in the training of new employees and students, with documentation of training and competency.
Responsibilities:
1. Demonstrates technical knowledge, competence, and skill in independently performing applicable laboratory procedures and reporting of test results in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures and all applicable regulatory standards. Demonstrates ability to appropriately prioritize work for optimal patient care and to meet established turnaround time goals. Handles varying workloads while maintaining accuracy.
2. Follows through on all tests, procedures, or tasks, and reports any incomplete assignments to assure continuity of procedures. Communicates all necessary information to assure work is completed without interruption of service. Calls all critical/significant values as soon as available and documents action per protocol. Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate with lab coworkers, physicians, other caregivers, patients, and vendors.
3. Performs and evaluates all required quality control and maintenance procedures per protocol with complete and accurate documentation. Implements corrective action as appropriate. Demonstrates effective problem-solving and instrument troubleshooting skills. Recognizes deviation from expected results. Identifies, investigates, and communicates unusual or unexpected results or situations.
4. Embraces a culture of safety by ensuring all Infection Control / Safety protocols are followed at all times. Maintains cleanliness of own work area and equipment. Helps maintain organization and cleanliness of work/storage areas.
5. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by utilizing supplies appropriately to avoid wastage. Replaces all supplies used during the shift to assure volumes are sufficient for the following shift, and properly disposes of waste. Rotates stock to ensure oldest supplies are used first.
6. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities
Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:
  • Education: Associate Degree Clinical Lab Science or Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from an institution OR A Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral degree in a Chemical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology from an institution OR meet one of the educational requirements outlined in CLIA 493.1491
  • Credential(s): MLS within 12 months of hire, if not already obtained, MT (ASCP), MT (AMT),CLS (NCA), MLT(ASCP), or other equivalent certification within 12 months of hire date/promotion date
  • Experience: Required: None required for MLS/MT/CLS staff . At least 2 years of experience in high complexity testing required for MLT staff.
