What is climate risk insurance?

Climate risk insurance is a type of insurance product designed to protect individuals, businesses, or governments against financial losses caused by climate-related events, such as floods, hurricanes, droughts, or wildfires. It works by providing payouts or coverage when certain climate-triggered conditions are met, helping policyholders recover from disasters more quickly. This insurance is increasingly important as climate change leads to more frequent and severe weather events, and it can also incentivize risk reduction strategies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a climate risk insurance professional?

To thrive as a Climate Risk Insurance professional, you need expertise in risk assessment, climate science, and insurance principles, often supported by a degree in finance, environmental science, or actuarial studies. Familiarity with modeling software, data analytics platforms, and relevant industry certifications like Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills help professionals interpret complex data and explain risk scenarios to clients. These skills are crucial for accurately assessing climate-related risks and developing effective insurance solutions in a rapidly changing environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in climate risk insurance?

Professionals in climate risk insurance often navigate rapidly evolving scientific data, regulatory frameworks, and unpredictable weather events that impact risk assessment and pricing. Collaborating closely with underwriters, actuaries, and climate scientists is essential to accurately model and manage emerging risks. Staying updated on advancements in climate modeling tools and regulatory changes is crucial, as is effectively communicating complex risk information to clients and stakeholders. This dynamic environment requires adaptability, strong analytical skills, and a proactive approach to ongoing learning.

What You Will Do:

Our Climate Risk, Resilience, and Sustainability team helps clients understand, quantify, manage, disclose, and act on climate-related risks and opportunities across physical climate risk, transition risk, resilience, adaptation, mitigation, decarbonization, and regulatory readiness. Our work combines climate data, geospatial and scenario analysis, financial and operational analysis, and leading frameworks such as TCFD, CSRD, IFRS sustainability standards, SASB, CDP, and related regulatory and investor expectations.

As a Managing Consultant, you will lead client-facing workstreams, translate climate science, policy, data, and business implications into practical strategies and implementation plans, and support the growth of digitally enabled and AI-supported climate risk and resilience offerings.

Key responsibilities for this position include:

  • Manage climate risk and resilience, mitigation and adaptation, and regulatory readiness workstreams, including scoping support, workplan development, delivery management, client coordination, and quality review.
  • Assess physical and transition climate risks by combining climate datasets, asset-level exposure and vulnerability information, scenario analysis, geospatial analysis, financial and operational impact assessment, insurance considerations such as insured value, uninsured exposure, insurability, and potential coverage changes, policy and regulatory developments, market shifts, technology change, carbon pricing, value-chain risks, and stakeholder requirements.

  • Support climate disclosure and reporting by translating TCFD, CSRD, IFRS Sustainability Standards, SASB, CDP, assurance readiness, regulatory gap assessment, metrics, targets, and disclosure narrative requirements into actionable client deliverables.
  • Translate climate science, risk analytics, financial and insurance-related implications, policy developments, enterprise risk management considerations, and implementation options into executive-ready presentations, decision-useful insights, and practical recommendations.
  • Facilitate client executive briefings, workshops, interviews, and working sessions with confidence, clarity, and strong business judgment.
  • Manage project teams and consultants by setting clear expectations, reviewing work products, coaching team members, and supporting a collaborative, high-performance culture.
  • Contribute to business development and solution innovation, including market research, solution design, proposal development, thought leadership, and the growth of Guidehouse's climate risk and resilience services.
  • Apply digital tools, automation / coding, data analytics, and AI-enabled approaches to improve climate risk assessment, program implementation, reporting, and client decision-making.

What You Will Need:

  • Must be a US Citizen or US Permanent Resident due to nature of client engagements.
  • Bachelor's degree in climate science, sustainability, environmental management, engineering, economics, finance, data science, public policy, business, or a related field from an accredited university or college.
  • Six (6+) plus years of relevant industry, consulting, or post-graduation academic research experience. Note that internships, co-ops, graduate research conducted as part of a degree program, and fellowships are not counted towards years of experience.
  • Experience with climate datasets, asset-level risk screening, catastrophe or hazard modeling, and analytical platforms such as ArcGIS, Python, R, and Power BI. This experience may include hands-on programming, process management, and/or project management.
  • Professional or technical background in climate risk, resilience, mitigation, adaptation planning, climate policy, enterprise risk management, and/or corporate sustainability.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, research, written communication, verbal communication, relationship-building, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project teams, coordinate with internal teams and external vendors or contractors, deliver client-ready work products with limited supervision, and collaborate with leadership to create, refine, and scale effective offerings.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Ability to work in a Guidehouse Office or Client Office.

What Would Be Nice To Have:

  • Management consulting experience with a large consulting firm.
  • Sector experience in real estate, healthcare, consumer packaged goods, agriculture, apparel, logistics, packaging, or other climate-exposed industries.
  • Professional Engineering certification and/or specialized experience in facilities management and building systems, energy or civil infrastructure, site inspection, permitting, and construction oversight.
  • Experience integrating climate risks and sustainability activities into corporate risk management activities and/or enterprise risk management.
  • Demonstrated success in business development, proposal development, offering design, or growth of a consulting service area.
  • Familiarity with insurance considerations related to climate risk, including insured and uninsured exposure, asset insurability, and the potential impacts of climate hazards on insurance availability, pricing, and coverage.
The annual salary range for this position is $113,000.00-$188,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
