Job description

Description The Midwest T&D Transmission Business Line Manager will provide overall leadership, vision, and managerial direction for establishing Burns & McDonnell's position within the regional Transmission Market.
This position will have primary accountability for all project management and business development within the Midwest Transmission market. This position will work closely with several other managers within the Midwest and the overall Transmission leadership team including:
  • T&D Project Management Director - responsible for overall client development and execution of T&D projects within the region.
  • T&D Operations Manager - responsible for internal department personnel, operations, and coordination with section and department manager(s) throughout the region
  • T&D Global Practice Manager - responsible for overall T&D business within the region.
  • T&D Business Development Manager - responsible for business development within the region.
  • Transmission Managing Director - responsible for overall Transmission nationally.
  • Transmission Department Manager - responsible for staffing, career development, and direct supervision of all design resources and Project Engineers within the Transmission department throughout the region.

Specific areas of responsibility include:
Business Development:
  • Identification and pursuit of Transmission opportunities for the Midwest Region.
  • Establishing Burns & McDonnell's position in the regional Transmission market through strategic planning and business plan development with a focus on continued growth in market share, profitable growth, and a great work environment.
  • Providing overall oversight and direction for the business development of the Midwest Transmission Markets. Work with appropriate personnel to lead the development and administration of the Midwest Transmission Business Plan.
  • Oversee the development of strong, work-winning relationships with key Transmission stakeholders at current and prospective clients.
  • Lead the development and diversification of the Midwest Transmission markets, including beyond T&D-owned clients and into other Global Practices' clients through cross-selling efforts.
  • Oversee the development of Midwest Transmission work with new clients as well as the expansion of Transmission work with existing clients.
  • Provide oversight for the pursuit process including "go/no-go" decisions, win strategies, proposal staffing, development of pricing, contract terms and conditions, and risk-reviews.
  • Direct QC process to monitor the development of scopes of work, schedules and budgets during the pursuit process.
  • Ensure alignment and support of regional office proposal efforts and risk assessments.
  • Provide senior-level technical advice regarding execution of engineering projects to the project execution teams.
  • Other business development duties as assigned

Personnel:
  • Coordinate with T&D Operations Manager and Transmission Department Manager to drive recruitment and development of staff needed to grow Transmission.
  • Recruitment and development of Center of Excellence leads for each Transmission Market segment.
  • Recruitment and development of Transmission Project-Managers-In-Training and Project Managers.
  • Management and career development of Transmission project management personnel. Accountable for the development of leadership within the Transmission project management group and for assisting with the overall leadership development within the office. In coordination with the Project Management Director provide oversight and direction for Project Managers to invest appropriately in their project teams' personnel to maximize employee-owner career development, satisfaction, and retention.
  • Facilitate a thriving work environment that facilitates the recruitment, development, and retainment of the market's top-talent.
  • Maintain a forecast of workload and required skillsets and support the relevant personnel managers on recruitment and development of staff needed to achieve that and grow Transmission.
  • Work with personnel managers of all departments contributing to the Transmission Business Line to identify gaps in skillsets and/or levels such that they can hire and structure their respective departments to allow for realizing the Business Line Manager's vision and for the pursuit of all viable opportunities in the region. Coordinate with the Project Management Director to drive the training and development of project management, business development, and client management skillsets within the team.
  • Conduct mid-year and annual performance evaluations for direct reports and participate in evaluations of other staff as required.
  • Other personnel duties as assigned.

Project Management:
  • Identify and oversee implementation of effective change management practices on projects. Proactively work through corrective actions where deficiencies are identified.
  • Attend, actively engage, and provide guidance in all Transmission Q1 and Q2 meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with the Midwest Risk Management Framework for all Transmission projects.
  • Overall identification and implementation of project management methods, procedures, tools, and technology to win new work and to execute existing work more profitably.
  • In coordination with relevant Department Managers, provide support and direction for all Midwest Transmission engineering projects including the project management, project planning, scheduling, resource management, budgeting, and the establishment/execution of critical project objectives. Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
  • Responsible for the profitability and financial performance of the Midwest Transmission projects portfolio. Includes oversight and identification of Transmission project and portfolio risks including the administration of the associated mitigation strategies to provide for a portfolio of work that meets or exceeds set goals.
  • Provide leadership to the project management team; direct and coordinate assignments and activities of several disciplines ensuring efficient and cost-effective utilization of staff.
  • Conduct recurring project reviews to identify execution risks and review financial performance and resources.
  • Provide senior-level engineering and project management expertise to guide project managers in executing engineering projects.
  • Establish effective policies and procedures that promote project success, including on-time delivery, client satisfaction, quality and profitability.
  • Ensure that client goals and initiatives are met.
  • Ensure that project managers understand and follow the Burns & McDonnell Quality Control program for all projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Collaboration:
  • Facilitate collaboration with other Burns & McDonnell offices to coordinate business plans and assist in the pursuit of Transmission opportunities.
  • Support the Transmission Section/Department Manager and any Midwest Liaisons, as applicable, in the development and leveraging of strong international and subcontractor relationships dedicated to the support of Midwest Transmission projects.
  • Work with the Business Development and Account Management personnel for the development and administration of client and project capture plans.
  • Coordinate with the Transmission team to support the development of EPC and Program Management opportunities within the Midwest Transmission market.
  • Act as a leader in the advancement and development of innovative department tools and workflows to increase department efficiencies and promote the adoption and use of technology tools across all Transmission project teams.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Safety:
  • Adherence and promotion of Burns & McDonnell's safety programs, training, and policies for all Transmission projects and well as the promotion and management of the Safety & Health performance of the project team members.

Qualifications Bachelor's degree in engineering, business, or related degree for an accredited program and a minimum 7 years of relevant project management related experience in the Transmission industry. Other qualifications include:
  • Proven experience developing new clients and opportunities.
  • Registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer or Project Management Professional is preferred.
  • Strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.
  • Strong experience with document control, scheduling, cost control and project management software is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of Burns & McDonnell financials.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
  • Ability to handle difficult situations with tact, poise, and discernment.
  • Proven planning, collaboration, and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to handle large volumes of work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • A basic understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles is required.
  • Employee management and development experience is strongly preferred.

Compensation
$135,000.00-340,000.00 Yearly
The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
